Fairy Tail has been criticised largely by fans mainly for its time skip, pacing and fan service. Fans complained the time skip was incredibly anticlimactic and was a blatant rip off of One Piece/Bleach/Naruto however some said it was the greatest plot twist Mashima ever planned. The pacing is said to be too fast taking one to three chapters for large fights to resolve with the exception of the fights against the Big Bad, the fast pacing is either viewed as refreshing or rushed meaning Fairy Tail members win most their fights through ass pulls and villains are defeated anti-climatically. Fan service is probably the most negatively targeted part of the manga, after chapter 355, Mashima admitted on Twitter he went too far with fan service after Team Natsu went completely naked in a unisex hot spring. After Mashima applied fan service to female characters being tortured, wounded and close to death in chapters 383 and 384, fans said it isn't even funny anymore and is just plain creepy, a lot of people even say Mashima's tastes are incredibly weird and wrong.

Two English dubs of Fairy Tail exist, one by Funimation and another by Animax that only airs in South and South East Asia, a lot of fans end up thinking Funimation switched its entire cast in between seasons.

Mashima had always intended for Faust to be Makarov's Edolas counterpart but was forced to exclude it from the manga for unknown reasons. He was glad it was added to the anime but complained both the English and Japanese voice actors, Shinpachi Tsuji and R. Bruce Elliot, made it far too obvious. Similarly Mashima wanted to add Edolas Gajeel to the manga but unwillingly had to remove him for unknown reasons again, he was glad he could be put in the anime.

Most anime-only characters are actually created by Hiro Mashima, the ones that appear in the Key of Starry Heavens arc are even accepted as being canon as they appear in chapter 282 of the manga.

Many Bleach characters have the same voice actors as Fairy Tail characters, some of the main ones are Elfman and Chad, Freed and Grimmjow, Jellal and Ulquiorra, Pantherlily and Ginjo & Ichiya and Aizen.

Erigor, leader of former dark guild Eisenwald, was supposed to appear during the Oracion Sesis arc in the manga but was only briefly mentioned at the start of the arc before team Natsu departed, he was added into the anime version of the arc.
