Mashima originally wanted to make a manga about messenger guilds and had also pre planned Natsu's motion sickness from the beginning. When he'd finished chapter 1 he thought it would be more interesting to change the messengers into mages who complete quests for money.

Gajeel's Iron Dragon's Roar was shown as a whirlwind laced with shards of metal in the manga, in the anime it was the same as Natsu's but with a greyish hue. Later on in the anime it was corrected.
