I feel kinda bad because I actually really looked forward to the 4kids episodes when they were coming out (I never watched subs at the time so I didn't know how badly they ****** with it).

The opening always got me real ******* hyped, still does too since I guess it reminds me of my discovery of One Piece, which I guess is the best thing that came out of the 4kids dub in the end.

yea, same i had no concept of anime when i was a kid, i just thought it was all cartoons made by cartoon network or nick and i loved that opening as a kid and still do. Though I think i only saw 2 or 3 ep of that One piece.
Another classic opening that i liked was DBZ, that got **** me hyped.
I heard the Japanese opening for DBZ the old 90s one a while ago , cant beat the English one but i saw the new english kai one imo that sucked

A lot of censors for One Piece made no sense at all.

Especially things like how they completely cut out the entire arc related to the Whale. While Brooke wasn't a thing back then, I wonder what they were expecting to do if that piece of the story ever came up again.

I honestly don't recall. I only really recall how weird it was seeing that deer guy on Chopper's island holding some explosives or something. Along with that guy on Usopp's island holding a rubber hammer gun up to the kid. That one was pretty funny though, looking back at it.

Yeah Arlong was going to execute Bell-mere because she didnt pay some tax that he wanted since he and his crew occupied their island. In the original, she was shot and killed spot on, but in the 4kids dub, she was "taken to the dungeon".

some parts in the early part were pretty sad and stuff, but later on it just felt like "oh. No he got this problem. Oh, now that went wrong. Oops, more trouble. Too bad".

I mean, the Dragon Ball one really isn't surprising if you know how manga is serialized.

You get an accepted work and either release a one-shot or have a few chapters to work with. If the response is good you either republish the work from the one-shot by adapting it to last longer than one chapter and see how it goes or are given more chapters to do.

It is how literally every company works. You can have a hugely successful series in your library of works but you would have to be sucking like 8 guys' dicks to get a straight-to-anime release of a new work.

Most manga that are over 20 chapters long end because the readership starts declining and the writer typically has a "final arc" already prepared that is constructed in such a way that any events leading up to it can be passive factors or dropped as easily as possible. It's why Bleach makes such obvious dividers between each arc, so that a final one can be used and not feel out of place (although honestly the way Bleach is written you could end the series after nearly any arc and it would seem to be a complete story). It's the basis of One Piece, go from island to island with little connection needed to maintain story flow, if the series were to ever need a sudden end just slap the start of the final arc in instead of the next island. Even Dragon Ball made it's arcs end in a way that, should viewership have declined, you can easily say "and Goku went on to train Uub and everything was peaceful" (minor adaptation where needed)

But it's that old school stuff where they always yell the name of their bloody attacks and fly through the air for an hour while doing so.
It's one of those cliché'd ones.
