Okay tormain, I consider miself a great big fan of the lord of the rings, and I have readed most of Tolkiens books. Let me just give you a little bit of advice.
First of all, I think the films of the Lord of the Rings are wonderful, just because how they treat Tolkiens world: instead of making a shiny world of high fantasy, they made it realistic and actually quite close to accurate medieval life. The heroes are this, heroes, but not because they are mighty huge barbarians or great wizards, but because they stand where other ones don't dare.

Aside from this, I would recommend you to read the books. Not simply for it's writing style (The name of the wind is excellent in this aspect) but because of it's lore. I recommend you to dig in it's history, and maybe not read the Sillmarillion, but to look for articles on wikias and stuff. Tolkien made a huge world, and made extremely complex. The films alone are a great story, but in the books there is the true extensiveness: before, during and after the films; legends, stories, different cultures, the story and style of every place, the languages, and even the songs.

The films have been a good way to make it known worldwide (even more than before), but they don't have the depth of Tolkien's writings.
And also, we can't forget that it was exactly him who settled the bases of the modern fantasy, and for many reasons.
I hope this could help you to get into it's work.

You seem to know a lot about LotR and I've been planning to read the books, starting by The Hobbit and then the LotR trilogy, so I'll ask you: are the books complicated? Are there too many names and characters to memorize? Because I always have a hard time remembering all the characters, I'm having this problem right now while reading the GoT books.

Well, if you first read the hobbit you shouldn't have to worry about names. It isn't an epic tale of war and battles (as they have made in the films), it's more like a long tale of adventures. You shouldn't have to worry about names, they are quite easy to manage. Also, the language isn't too complex.
For the Lord of the Rings, if you are a die-hard fan like me you would like to know every character and it's origin and history. But for the "core" story, there are fewer characters than GoT. Maybe the songs or the elvish names may confuse you, but they are not essential to understand the story.

Oh good less characters than GoT Don't get me wrong I love game of thrones but there is so just many people involved it's hard to keep track sometimes. After this explanation I'm just wondering, how many books there are about middle earth?

LOTR Soundtrack - For Frodo
There are The Silmarillion (origins of the world, first, second and third era), The Hobbit (prequel of LotR), the LotR saga, the annexes 1 & 2 (after the LotR saga), about 9 different books of tales, songs and legends (one of my favourites, the Ballads of Beleriand), Sons of Hurin, and I guess that "Tales from the Dangerous Kingdoms" are also settled in the LotR world. There may be more books, though, maybe some partially written.

If you don't have any experience with the story or world (named Arda), it can be a little bit overwhelming. Not the LotR or Hobbit parts, but the Silmarillion and the Lost Tales triple the number of characters in GoT. Even if they are only mentioned, they have their own story and origins, and it's not easy to remember all of them.

If you want a complete experience (yet difficult) read the whole saga. If you just simply want to enjoy the Lord of the Rings "core", read the Hobbit and LotR. If you have them settled, you will be able to understand better the other books.
Well, do as you please. I started at 12 years old reading the Hobbit and then the LotR three books, and at fifteen I read the Silmarillion. I have been re-reading them though, as well as reading the other books.
I hope you enjoy it.
