This is what I feel, too.
They left it ambiguious becase of the mixed feelings of the audience. Many wouldn't have figured out his plan and would have wanted him to die, others (like myself) would have realised why he was being a prized douche and wanted him to live.

But the point his, he may or may not have obtained Code. Even so, you need to die first for Code to activate, if my understanding is right.

There are a lot of strong hints at the end of the series that suggest the possibility that he survived the fatal stabbing.

Besides CC's final line in the show, the biggest hint at this possibility Lelouch survived is the vision Nunnaly saw when touching his "dead" body. These visions were only experienced before when touching CC who had a Code, which grants the user immortality. It's believed by many fans that he took his father's code before killing him, thus making him immortal WITH CC. It's actually a pretty sweet thought.
