The actual Theophastus Bombastus Von Hoenheim would be a nice place to start. He has some easy to understand works. Levity dot com has a great selection of original alchemical texts to browse. Also may want to learn some basic Gnosticism. Gnostic imagery is all throughout FMA and it is interesting to see the parallels. and has some connections to alchemy.

It seems a bit silly to specifically study a subject that's make-believe. Isaac Newton tried a bit of alchemy, if that helps with your research, you can look into that.

It's a great thought, but alchemy doesn't correspond with our physics, so you're kinda down and out. If you want to though, check out a lot of the books during the 1400-1700s, this was the time when alchemy hit its highest point.
