Poor character development, the main character is extremely bland, he's also extremely overpowered, the love interest is even worse, it's trying to be an action/drama but just turns into a harem/romance, etc.

Explaining why SAO is terrible is really easy, and can be done in a few steps:

1) Kirito is a terrible, flat, two dimensional, "mary-sue", wish fulfillment-husk of a character
2) The entire series (including the plot, the setting, supporting characters, etc) is written and shaped and developed with Kirito as the anchor. The series is created for the sole purpose of giving Kirito a stage.
3) Therefore, since Kirito is an awful character, and the anime is made to cater to Kirito, the entire series ends up suffering and falling apart at the seems.

There is more to say and explain, of course, but that's all you need to know. If Kirito didn't suck as a character, or if he was gone completely, the series might have been good.

I felt like they really did a bad job with her death. I was expecting her to either be somehow revived or miraculously live, but she died just like that. I had more emotion watching my goldfish get flushed down the toilet than I had watching her die.

**** hit rock-bottom when they moved to some far away summer cottage like some old couple. It was only really good for the first 5 episodes or something. The non-episodic format of Kirito going through the game and helping other people while progressing in the game was actually quite interesting. Similar to Mushishi in that regard. Then it threw all it's potential away because muh self insert bully beatdown powerfantasy. **** that show man...

The first half was *better.* It wasn't necessarily good. Understanding the basics of what makes a good plot and good characters makes this very clear. SAO got off to a rocky start anyway with the whole "beater" thing, and then completely dropped the ball within the first 10 episodes (I forget the episode numbers exactly, it's been awhile since I watched it). The only thing the anime has going for it is the original premise (trapped in an MMO) is interesting, and as we get closer to feasible VR, almost relevant to the real world.

Now that the anime has completely abandoned the interesting premise, there's not much praise to give it until it improves somehow. The fact that Kirito is still the main character, however, means it will likely never improve, because it is painfully obvious the entire series is written around the character, and since Kirito is a terrible character, the entire series suffers.

I guess people insult SAO a lot and its kinda the standard now, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I like the anime because it kills time for me. I can just watch some neat fight scenes and enjoy a story for what it is with SAO.

You can watch whatever you like for whatever reasons you like, but I just think I should let you know that if you are looking for "neat fight scenes" SAO is not the place to find them. The action scenes are weak, flaccid and disappointing. That big monster/minotaur thing they fought as one of the bosses in the actual SAO game was a complete let down, and the moment it became clear there were absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever for the series. Now it's only worth watching to see what dumb stuff they do next.

Or to kill time, I guess.

The main reason so many people insult it is because of all the people who praise it like the highest form of art.

I swear, it's always the same with any other art form, if it starts to grow a fanbase, it starts to grow haters as well as a natural response.

If people could just watch their shows without banging on about how good it is, people wouldn't have to spend so much time reading about how bad it is as aftermath.
