My system usually works.
This is what I do:
If a list of items comes up and there is a rare, I take the second rarest thing that is available. For instance, there was a magic spell worth 3k that came up, and while everyone was trying for that one, I stole a Gaddafi #2 (2k), and a Magic Mirror (500) that came up in the same list. I got them easily because everyone tried for the best one. The insane items are always gone in a matter of seconds. Take advantage of the rush as I do, and capitalize on the opportunity that presents.
