It's a Destroyer
It's also a Starship

A Star-Destroyer if you will.

The why wasn't it called a Destoyship then?!?!?! Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Well...not quite In the old Expanded Universe/Legends, it's...a bit complicated. So basically, Star Destroyer began as a brand name of ships made by Kuat Drive Yards. Later on, it was also made into a new ship class as an intermediate between a heavy cruiser and a battlecruiser...which adds to the confusion because there's also a Destroyer class already. Basically, Star Destroyers are "Pocket Battleships", too big to be cruisers, but too small to be proper Battlecruiers or Battleships/Dreadnaughts.

Oh, and to make it even MORE confusing, there's a Dreadnaught-Class Heavy Cruiser as well.

Most idiodic part of the entire movie.

"I have a weapon that can fire twice before it depletes its own energy source!"
#58 to #4 - howaboutnsfw (12/26/2015) [-]
RIP Ilum.

Ilum being the planet they built it on, not the ones it destroyed. They made all of those planets for the movie.
User avatar #72 to #58 - huntergriff ONLINE (12/26/2015) [-]
when did they say that?
#93 to #72 - howaboutnsfw (12/26/2015) [-]
Not everything is outright said. It is in the same location on the new canon map as Ilum was in the old canon map. It also matches the physical description of the planet. Also since Ilum is where Jedi go to retrieve their lightsaber crystals (besides Dantooine). It makes sense that they used the large supply of crystals to focus the beam enough to hit an entire star systems worth of planets dead on simultaneously.
User avatar #97 to #93 - huntergriff ONLINE (12/26/2015) [-]
nevermind i saw the map. but Ilum doesn't have trees on it...I don't think, and Ilum's shown up in the clone wars.
#98 to #97 - howaboutnsfw (12/26/2015) [-]
That is true and seems to be the only thing to seem off. However I think it would be a waste of storytelling for them to say that it isn't Ilum given it's location and that it can explain how the laser was built. Prefer them not to tell us for sure though as I think it is better storytelling to let us speculate and question. A good story allows for lots of mythos.
User avatar #99 to #98 - huntergriff ONLINE (12/26/2015) [-]
it's eventually going to be clarified one way or another.
#100 to #99 - howaboutnsfw (12/26/2015) [-]
Yeah usually the novels take care of the details like that. I'm also hoping that the planet that Luke is on in the end of the movie is Rakata Prime. There is some good evidence to support this one as well. One being it's recent canonization with the release of the previously mentioned map. It would also explain the map which is not tied to Luke but the planet. It could be the same star map from the KoTOR game. It is mentioned by Kylo Ren that the parts of the map that they have were salvaged from the Empire and JJ mentioned that R2 got it from the Death Star when he hooked up to the mainframe. The planet fits the description perfectly except for being strictly tropic. And they both are in the same location on the Galactic Map. I just hope the new director goes in the direction that I think JJ was trying to send it. But this is just speculation until the new movie.

I gotta admit this thing was really ******* cool in my opinion.
#17 to #14 - bann (12/26/2015) [-]
I liked the movie and all, but I found what they did kinnda funny for this thing.

When they discuss a battle plan they're like "This was the deathstar....NOW THIS IS THE SUPER-DUPER DEATHSTAR"

It's as if they were trying to make a point of being "no we're not re-hashing the plot of 4, this time the deathstar is bigger"

Still liked it, but I found that part a little weird.
User avatar #18 to #17 - huntergriff ONLINE (12/26/2015) [-]
***** , back in the old canon there were literally nine deathstar like superweapons three of which were actual death stars including the first two that were destroyed in A new hope and return of the jedi.
#21 to #18 - bann (12/26/2015) [-]
Huh, didn't know that part. I suppose that follows the trend of WE CAN MAKE AN EVEN BIGGA WEAPON!!!
#31 to #21 - afireinsidebrad (12/26/2015) [-]
another thing people seem to miss is that the Empire probably was working on this thing at the same time as the death star, since it was around for a good 50 or so years before, a top secret project that the emperor himself probably personally kept secret plans for so that they wouldnt be found, no way the First Order had the time or resources for that thing
User avatar #89 to #21 - secondlawprevails (12/26/2015) [-]
Soooooo Nazi Germany?
User avatar #39 to #17 - bigbonew (12/26/2015) [-]
I agree. The best way of self-humor was Han Solo's "Come on, it's just bigger".

From the physicist point of view, something feels remotely off, if a planet is sucking up a star's mass, and everything still is the same with the planet... size, gravity, heat etc...
User avatar #42 to #39 - huntergriff ONLINE (12/26/2015) [-]
don't...don't try to apply physics to star wars, it's just going to be one *********** .

User avatar #60 to #39 - spearpwi (12/26/2015) [-]
They can traverse the space between stars in a matter of days whilst only travelling at 1.5 times the speed of light. You can see the planets within a visible range of one another when they're getting blown to hell. Lightsabers have no mass and yet they still somehow manage to put leverage in to the blade as if it were made of steel.

Physics ain't **** when the film ain't a sci fi. This is a fairy tale, and it's a beautiful mess.

Yeah, asked myself that question myself too... my explanation would be that siths had pretty much upper hand at that time so they made it as big " **** you" to the resistance. Kinda like building monuments after war... in evil way

Also kylo ren was really obsessed by darth vader, so I get why building the same thing as he did was one of his goals

I know, they could at least of had more than just one shield generator, and showed the entire fleet before takeoff. That would've made the whole Starkiller scene a lot better.

I think they shouldn't have used another death weapon (its the third time they've used one as a plot device in 7 movie) but i thought it was handled well enough. Am i happy? no, but i am satisfied

But it steals energy from the nearest Sun. Which is a star. Actually, are all Suns stars or is it just our one?

Destroys Stars.
User avatar #10 to #6 - vorarephilia (12/26/2015) [-]
A star is a sun to the planets orbiting it. No planets mean it isn't a sun.

squares and rectangles thing
User avatar #12 to #10 - platinumaltaria ONLINE (12/26/2015) [-]
Nope, the "Sun" is a name, other stars are just that. The same way that other planets have moons, but ours is simply "the Moon".

I can suspend my disbelief over the idea of building then rebuilding a weapon capable of blowing up a single planet but it requires an entire day to recharge.

Maybe.

But a weapon they BUILT AROUND THE SUN is way too over the top. Not to mention its literally a ******** death star they made needlessly huge.

What was wrong with the original Death Star were the they worried they were gonna destroy it for the 3rd time the same way?
#50 to #28 - sacrilegious (12/26/2015) [-]
DSII didn't require a day to recharge, it fired multiple shots into the rebel fleet above the forest moon of Endor.

And they built Starkiller Base in a planet, not around a sun. Not ******** , it doesn't have to be anywhere near it's target.

My guess is the problem was the holes.
#29 - muken (12/26/2015) [-]
If your current biggest ships are called "Star Destroyers" doesn't calling your new super weapon a "Death STAR" seem like a downgrade?
User avatar #57 to #29 - symmiie ONLINE (12/26/2015) [-]
No because death is worse than destroy duh.
#59 - howaboutnsfw (12/26/2015) [-]
I believe the name came from the fact that it alone could conquer an entire star system.
#23 - mattymc (12/26/2015) [-]
Its the Empire's approximation of the Arleigh Burke Class, quick, versatile, ubiqutious, and effective. You wanna get a Base delta zero (see also: exterminatus) done call a star dreandought (Megador, Executor, Bellator, etc)
#84 - scorcho (12/26/2015) [-]
this type of ship is called a destroyer.
if it were to fly around between stars, you might call it a star destroyer.
and that's really how it is.

User avatar #46 to #36 - brobathehutt (12/26/2015) [-]
Actually in KOTOR one those same ships, which were produced at the star forge, completely destroyed an entire planet. So they can pretty much blow up anything, a shame the star forge never came back up after the first KOTOR it has neat history.
User avatar #55 to #46 - ludislavonac (12/26/2015) [-]
