He is the spirit of hope in the DC universe, and one of the greatest defenses the earth has
Kryptonian Threats and magic can harm, he can be matched strength wise with beings like say Mongol or Darksied, and there are several beings within the DCU that he can't feasibly defeat by himself, such as Mr. Mxyzptlk, Anti-Monitor, Alexander Luthor, Monarch, Beings like the Spectre, or various sorcerers
We have a shit ton of characters devoted being anthisises to Superman (a wonderful example is 'What is so wrong with truth, justice, and the american way), Why can't we just have one that is just a good guy, and one who will protect us, no matter what

But that doesn't really happen anymore, writing for Batman books has been a lot better the last.. Idunno, 20 years? :P
Batman is just the ultimte PIS character (Plot induced stupidity) when in a crossover where he's competing with people like Green Lantern, Flash, Supes, Wonder Woman etc.
ut in his own ongoing titles Batman is actually a good read without too many stupid things.
