Pretty sure the Japanese didn't get into killing many Jews way back when, although that's probably because you'd be hard pressed to find any there even now.

The argumentation from both sides are retarded.

Seriously, Japan does need to learn English, just like every country does. I'm not some American or English patriot who think that English should dominate the world because of 'Merica or 'Ngland. I'm from Norway and yes, Norway does have a lot easier time learning English than Japan, but that's no excuse for not learning English.

I'm not blaming the local Japanese guy/girl although they also should take some action themselves the real blame is onto the government who doesn't really put any real effort into people learning English. They start off waaaaay too late learning English, and the English they teach in school is not very effective. At all!

Seriously, you can go to the ones with top grades in English, and they can't speak English for **** , but go to someone who maybe have been exchange student or have a interest in foreign countries, who may not have the best grades, will be waaaay better.

Source: Living in Japan

TL;DR Both guys are retarded and everyone in the world should be able to communicate through a language both can master preferably English .

I agree. English is the lingua franca of global commerce, business and all that good stuff which is going to get more and more integrated overtime, so it'd be a good idea to learn now to save yourself some trouble down the road.

As much as I agree with you on how foreign countries lack the proper education to teach English, I fail to see how you see every country need to learn English. I find it necessary a individual must learn English should they visit a country that rely on the language, but certainly those who have no intentions of visiting other countries have no need to educate themselves in English.

As convenient as English is for those who are involved in international business, there should be no necessity that a government must impose education on a language that someone may not commonly use. I'm convinced English isn't the only platform for countries to communicate through.

Also, on the matter of educating English, it is much more complicated than you would understand. Though I have little knowledge in the Norwegian dialect, I do know both Japanese and Chinese. When compared to English, the manner of pronunciation as well as grammar can be greatly diverse. In fact, sentence structures can be completely opposite in certain subjects. Of course, if we are simply speaking of "speaking" English, then we have to take notice of how foreign individuals who are insecure of their grasp on the language. Especially when facing local people who have a good grasp of the language. It takes a lot of confidence to speak loudly and clearly when the whole time you are questioning whether the words are structured properly. It's hard! It really is! Especially if you never had to actually practice the language in a daily routine.

" I fail to see how you see every country need to learn English."

English is the dominant language or in some instances even the required international language of communications, science, information technology, business, seafaring, aviation, entertainment, radio, and diplomacy.

English is already the world language in international terms, all countries are learning English or they should I do understand that Japanese and Chinese have difficult pronouncing words and it's a completely different language group, but guess what? They still need to learn it if they want to look outwards and not inwards.

"there should be no necessity that a government must impose education on a language that someone may not commonly use. "

This is not a good argument. Then you can basically say that about any subject. Science, Math, History, Social studies etc. And everyone should still learn English because it can be of major importance. I'm actually amazed that I have to explain why English is important. Japan learning English wouldn't just be better for us, but also for themselves.

"Also, on the matter of educating English, it is much more complicated than you would understand."

That's not an excuse for not learning it. The Japanese always say "がんばれます!" Which means, "do your best" Is their way of saying "good luck!" If they want to stay true to that saying this should be no different case.

And several people will have difficulties with the pronunciation. I have a hard time pronouncing the Japanese "R" since it's different from the Western Norwegian "R", but I'm not letting that stop me. It just means you have to work harder on learning it. It's not fair, but that is how it is.

"It's hard! It really is! Especially if you never had to actually practice the language in a daily routine."

One word. がんばれます!

I'm glad you took my response seriously and in return I'd like to continue this topic.

No doubt English is a dominant language, but as you have mentioned, it is only required in "some instances". By no means do all communications establish solely on that language. Perhaps in scientific discussions, the measurements may be written with the English alphabet, but that does not therefore justify the English language dominate that section (besides, we have yet to unify a country to adopt the universally accepted metric system).

By the way, just to make it clear, my main motivation for arguing against the emphasis of the English language is not out of nationalism or prejudice, but out of concern that there is groups out that are far too obsessed with the English language to remember the value of local dialects. By forging a society that strides to speak a single language will cause some loss in the local language that may have cultural value - or even value to language itself. Though I usually refrain from using anecdotes as a argument, I feel something from my personal experience will help explain my reasoning. I am the possibly the product of a society that aims towards unifying the language on a international platform - English! I am from Shanghai, and yet I cannot speak Shanghainese since my government prefers the national Mandarin. Though it's hard to tell, but my ability to speak Chinese is rather mediocre (at least for my stern father) and I find that I simply perform better on the English platform since that's what my school has been teaching me all the time. So don't take me for a English hater - I love it - but I am a simple person who felt that I've sacrificed many things that I feel had great value simply to learn a language that I seem to have little use in my daily routine. Nothing is more awkward and lonely than to find a brother from home in a foreign land, then fail to utter a word that's from home.
(Apparently out of character count)

(Follow up)
In summary,
Yes, English is a convenient and popular language
Yes, it would make cooperation among international individuals easier
Yes, I understand we need to strive to a better international society
But it doesn't mean everyone in a country must learn it.
But it doesn't mean every other language should be inferior
But Yes, if it is for international individuals only, I can agree with you that English is great.
But No, and I mean no way does that mean I agree we should focus on English.

As thatguyonthright said, English is lingua franca and therefore is the language every country should learn how to speak. I know there are difficulties with Asian and other non-Germanic language group (calling English a Germanic-language group feels insulting to the Germanic-language group, but that's what they say it is anyway) but efforts to create a common world language has already been tried out and it didn't work, so like it or not, English is the language everyone should learn.

You're talking about forcing them to learn English as a bad thing, but we force our children to learn many things. Count, speak, calculate, debate etc. why not introduce a common language everyone can speak? The first choice of that would be English.

I never said other languages should be inferior or that you should throw away your herritage or anything like that. Look, I'm as nationalistic as a Norwegian can get, without being an extremist, and I think it's very important that every Norwegian learn how to speak English, just as I think it's important that other people learn to speak it.

Japanese tourism suffers greatly because they can't speak proper English. An emergency can come up, people need to know directions, countries need to build relations by their populace and not just in terms of politics. For all this to happen you need to be able to communicate. What is the language on the top here? English.

As one would expect of Japan, something like that.
User avatar #4 - goldenfairy (02/28/2014) [-]
English and Japanese are very different grammatically and Japanese doesn't have sounds that English does, that's why they're having a lot issues.
User avatar #5 to #4 - infinitereaper [OP](02/28/2014) [-]
Well of course. Many languages are like that, which is why learning more languages is such a pain.
User avatar #6 to #5 - goldenfairy (02/28/2014) [-]
Japanese grammar is more similar to German (verb goes last), though it's still very different because of all the modifiers.
#39 to #4 - anon (03/01/2014) [-]
Why can native English speakers learn Japanese and not sound extremely retarded? I have a friend who's in Japan for Uni and is learning Japanese while studying.
User avatar #41 to #39 - goldenfairy (03/01/2014) [-]
It depends. I checked out Japanese grammar and I don't find it particularly hard. However I have never studied English grammar properly, I just go with whatever sounds better (it's not mothertongue but still a bit similar). That won't work with Japanese though, so I don't quite bother.

You only use the languages you need, or more correctly, people only naturally learn the ones they really need.
And within japan only japanese is the only language they really need.
Just like we haven't learned japanese because we don't really need it(even if you watch 48589594954 anime episodes, doesn't mean you will actually need it, consider subtitles, dubs etc)
