Pardon me for asking this, as I don't frequent /b/, but why do people post the comment "/thread" at the end of a chain of replies like that? Are they acknowledging that it is in fact a thread or what?

End of a thread.
In HTML (i.e. web coding), a / in front a word ends it. So
<thread>
-thread stuff here-
</thread> <<< what they're referencing (<thread> doesn't actually exist, it's just a metaphor for the thread itself)
It's like the ultimate reply which cannot be replied to, if that makes sense; the reply to end all replies.========

It basically symbolizes that no more replies are needed because of what has already been said.
