we should really switch to the metric system
but the reason we do the date like that is because if you were to read it you would say
"November 17, 2012" and for me saying something like "the 17th of november, 2012" or -now i find this really weird- "2012, november 17th" doesnt feel natural

The reason it's done is because when the U.S. gained independence from Britain, The colonists decided to do everything different from the British, because they felt that if they lived life the same way as the British, then all of the fighting would have been pointless. That is why we use a different measurement system, drive on the right side of the road, and write our dates differently. Me and my old history teacher both agreed that this was very immature and childish, but I guess the colonists just wanted to be different .Even though I prefer the customary system because it seems more natural to me, I took it upon myself to learn the metric system so I wouldn't seem like some dumbass ignorant tourist if I ever traveled to a foreign country.

Actually we kept the same measurement system. The metric system wasn't created until 1799 and most countries didn't start using it as their standard until the late 19th and 20th centuries, including the UK.

So while your statement makes sense to an emo teenage who wants to ignore their parents and do things because they say not to, it's actually complete and utter bullshit.

Congrats on teaching yourself the metric system, something every child in america learns around 1st grade when we're taught how to "measure" things. You must feel very proud being able to count to 10's and 100's and put kilo and centi in front of the various forms of measurement used in metric.

In truth EVERY SINGLE country that switched to metric system has VERY HEAVILY resisted the change. The US has simply held out a lot longer than most and our politicians are so fucked in the head trying to find the easy ways to limit our freedom without causing a civil war that they really don't give a shit about the measurement system.
