Got an Amazon Echo for Christmas.
My wife and kids will love it once I get it setup.
Need to pick a name for the damn thing. This is the name that will wake it up.. like "sir? for the iphone.
Trip Ts names this thing. Please keep in mind that my daughter is T and my son is ill. They are Very impressionable at these ages.

His maths is technically still wrong (although not significantly, since he rounded to 1/3 anyway). The chance isn't 1000/350, it's (999/1000)^350 chance to not get 777, so there's a 29.5% chance to get one.

You are understanding incorrectly. Every post is a unique number, but we're only focused on the last 3 numbers in any given post. So it can be any random number between 000 and 999. That's 1000 numbers total. Given that there are 350 posts, and every one of those posts have a 1 in 1000 chance of being 777, then you'd have a roughly 1/3 chance of 777 appearing somewhere in the thread.

Yup that's right for the way the question was posed - with a 'known' chance of occurrence of 1/1000. In reality you would have to have a way of calculating a rate of posts both on the site and in the thread so you could guess how fast the numbers would be increasing and from that extract a better value for the likelihood of occurrence in the 350 post limit.

Depending on the number of posts on the board, the same number can occur multiple times in a thread, so I was just thinking it'd be easier to assume it was independent on the basis that if number xxx is rolled it doesn't change the probability that it can be rolled again eventually in the same thread
