if i remember right, he raised the bear from a cub and says the way he keeps it's respect is to treat it like it's mother would, i.e, smacking it if it gets out of line. pretty sure he released it once it got closer to adult size.

He lives in a cabin in Alaska where he feeds bears that come around with a special permit intended for hunters who bait bears, so they stay around in the summer, and come back every year. He knows about forty of them by name. There is/ was an animal planet show about him.
