One should never punish a kid for needing to use the bathroom by making them stay 5 minutes after class ends. Even in fifth grade.

If it's a kid who always goes to the bathroom every second of the day or at the same time each day, maybe a talk and/or discipline is needed, but I remember that as a middle schooler (in my town high school was from grade 5 to 8) you didn't even need to ask, you just got up, signed a sheet so that if you were always skipping out on class at a time you'd be caught, and left. No asking the teacher or holding up class at all.

Sorry for the rant it just really grinds my gears when teachers prevent/punish a kid for using the restroom.
