I believe citizens should have guns. But not a ******* assault rifle... have a handgun, that's great for self defense. Also you can have a hunting rifle because it's a sport that a lot of people like. But there's no reason for you to have a high powered assault rifle... also armor piercings round are unnecessary for citizens to have. Keep your hand guns for self defense and keep your hunting rifle for hunting. You don't need a machine gun or some **** . But I understand people like to fire certain kinds of guns so what I suggest is let shooting ranges have those guns for people to rent. For example, you can go to your local shooting range and rent an AK-47 and a few hundred rounds. Have a blast, then you return it.

Hunting rifles typically fire a more powerful cartridge than assault rifles

Assault rifles are banned from the general public unless the government issues you a license. Semi automatic rifles are accessable to the general public, but the media still refers to them as assault rifles for effect and to improve ratings.

To own a semi automatic pistol (i.e. a beretta 9mm) and a carbine rifle (i.e. an AR15), you can dish out the same ammount rounds at the same rate of fire which is as fast as you can pull the trigger. Thus this defeats the (kill alot of people faster) argument, unless we are talking about magazine size in which case many Glock mags hold up to 20 rounds of ammunition.

If we're talking about caliber, many pistols and rifles fire the same caliber of ammunition. But if we're speaking most common, the beretta/glock pistol fires a 9mm round, where as the M4/AR fires a 5.56(or 223). So if we look at it that way, the 9mm does more damage than the 5.56 thus making the pistol a more deadly weapon. Granted there are rifles which fire higher calibers or larger rounds. Id accept the argument of the semi-auto AK47 which fires the 7.62, which is understandable, but the AK is not as commonly found as the AR is in the US.

Lastly is the argument of the "Assault weapons ban". By name, it cannot ban weapons such as the AR15 or semi auto AK because they are NOT ASSAULT RIFLES. An assault rifle is weapon which has more than one fire mode (not including the weapon safety). This can cover semi, burst, fullauto. As I previously stated, automatic weapons are banned to the general public without license. For a bill titled "Assault weapons ban", yet include restrictions for semi-automatic weapons is missleading.

I am not posing this as pro to either side, but simply stating facts surrounding this whole ordeal. Everyone on this forum has the right to their own opinion, however opinions are scientifically based on fact. Many of the arguments ive heard have been based on bias and missinformation.

You do realize assault rifles have been banned for sale to civilians since 1986 right? And I think I'll keep my AK in my room, right where I want it...
#228 to #116 - anonymous (06/20/2013) [-]
Why do you need your AK in your room? There's no reason for a civilian to have one...

Like I've said in my original comment, there's nothing wrong with having a handgun. That's all you need.

And what makes you the expert on what I do and don't need? You don't know the layout of my home or property so you have no idea what I need.
#362 to #340 - anonymous (06/20/2013) [-]
Why would you ever need an AK? The handgun can do the job just fine... You don't need to fill up a guy with lead, that's just unnecessary.

I live on quite a large plot of land, my home has a lot of open rooms connecting with others, a handgun will not be nearly as effective as my rifle.

You're mixing up two completely different bans

That assault weapons ban only effected semi automatic rifles, not automatic weapons AKA assault rifles, they are still banned from being produced for civilians.
