That's hilarious. I can imagine how the dad feels because that's how I feel when people play sports games.

It's okay, I'm not offended at all. I even believe being offended at any statement is stupid.

I thought you were referring to the fact I said video games weren't art, and called that an opinion.

Well many people out there would want to have a word with you about that. I mean some folks disregard evolution, right? So maybe you (and a lot of people) are wrong maybe the others are. I'm pretty curious about the whole art thing to be honest. As in: Will it change the acceptance of the medium or the medium itself? If it's going to be considered art that is. I'm not leaning towards either of the two ways of thinking though. I could say "as a gamer..." but in reality that's 2deep4me so I'll just wait and see.

If you're actually interested I could try to explain to you why games are intrinsically non-artistic via the means of logical discourse and argument. Would you want me to?

Okay, here we go: what we call art is, I should argue, a creative, human endeavor which's only purpose is aesthetic admiration. By this decree, it is obvious that the only way to qualify art is through aesthetic means (how much intellectual and emotional pleasure one can receive from it). If we take this definition of art, anything can be art as long as a human being makes it. This is obviously a faulty definition, because the word becomes almost totally vacuous and obsolete.

So, the next definition, most commonly used, is: a creative, human endeavor which's only aim is a high degree of aesthetic quality. By this decree, only objects (or performances in music or acting) that give way to a considerably high amount of intellectual and emotional stimulation would be considered art. In that sense, it is easy to comprehend that many good books, movies or pieces of music are art, whilst popular fiction, blockbuster movies and pop music (think Justin Bieber) would normally be deemed only entertainment.

A creative activity can then be considered an art form if it allows its products to be of a high aesthetic quality. The only way to verify this is to see whether the activity's "medium specificity" naturally allows for it.

Video games contain extreme beauty and interesting stories at times, but we can still not call them "art". The stories are a separate art form themselves (intrisically found and specific to movies and language (literature)), the graphic beauty also (visual art) and ditto for musical pieces (intrinsic to music).

Being a game, a video game's medium specificity is play (or interactivity). This activity possess no beauty whatsoever. If it did, we would call poker, chess, and pool as art forms. They are not, they are games.

Video games however are a hodgepodge of artistic and non-artistic activities. But the natural core of them are non-artistic.

Thus, video games contain aesthetic elements but are not intrinsically art.

I'm sorry, but can you become lebron james and dunk a basketball? become peyton manning and throw an 80 yard touchdown pass? become lionel messi and score 5 goals in a row? i can't, and thats why so many people play sports games. in fact, thats usually why people play video games: to become someone else and do something that you can't normally do.

You can't become Lebron James but you can dunk a basketball, or throw an 80 yard touchdown, it just takes practice and is probably much more satisfying in real life. Whereas in a FPS you're likely not going to be able to see that much action in the military and it's very risky. And in fantasy games you can clearly never experience much of anything in them.

On an unrelated note what's the source of that .gif?

I'd love to watch you "just practice" for a while and see you wake up one day throwing 80 yard touchdowns. Will not happen. Sports at a professional level take a tremendous amount of personal ability and natural born talent and athleticism.
You'd honestly have better luck at being a soldier and doing some of the things on call of duty rather than just up and Nick Foles'ing it up and down the field out of nowhere.
Try Madden, ****** fun as **** especially if you can get good at audibles and reading a defense

This game sucks. The chainsaw gives you the most money per tree, everything else earns you less so there is no point in buying machinery. You also move the fastest while on foot, when strafing, the vehicles are super slow. Oh and you also fall through the terrain constantly, there is even a button for resetting your vehicle when it happens so it's not like the developers didn't know about it.

here's a solid review:
So I walked for two hours to get my van, then I drove for an hour to get to the forest to cut down a tree. I watched as the tree fell, a single tear went down my face. I looked at my mission log, and there was a new mission. I then realized I had to cut down another tree that was 2 hours away. I got in my van and began to drive. It was then that I made the decision to drive 70mph into a building. Because only death could save me from this wooded hell.
