Yes. Yes it will. Your fans pull in the particles from the smoke you exhale, and it leaves this sticky, tarry dust all over your components. It's a bit of a bitch to clean up too. Canned air won't work here since it's too sticky. The last time I cleaned a smoker's PC, I had to use alcohol and a toothbrush, and the toothbrush was so gunked up by the end that I just had to throw it away.

Its quite shocking to see people's reactions when you open their case and their are globs of dust. I'd figure it would be common knowledge.
User avatar #11 to #8 - kukron (01/04/2016) [-]
It's also really bad for DVD/Blueray players lence.

Well **** . I do smoke in my room, like every day... all day.

you should probably clean your computer

Just did , half assed tho. The ncxt phantoms are easy to clean. But damn I can't get to it.
#15 to #14 - epodax (01/04/2016) [-]
Just clean your computer on a somewhat regular basis, also having dust filters and raise the computer just a couple of feet above the ground will help a lot on dust issues. I smoke in my room as well and I've yet to have an' issue "tar dust" in my computer. - And I don't clean it as often as I should.

Should be painted metal so the only way would be to repaint it I think, or buy a new case. Metal might be too thin to grind the paint off for repainting
User avatar #83 to #80 - moorgar (01/05/2016) [-]
nah only the side with the fans are made of metal, rest is plastic

**zayinzetaseven used "*roll picture*"**
**zayinzetaseven rolled image**i dont know what type of material its made of but if its just stained/dirty then as far getting things to become white again you could go get one of those Mr. Clean magic erasers or maybe just bleach peroxide would be a suitable replacement if you dont have any dampen a rag with it and wipe it down, let it sit for a few minuites then scrub it with a tooth brush or something .....if its Oxidation (which it very well may be if the sun hits it at all) then go out and get some Off! bug spray and spray down a rag...should clean it right up
#58 to #31 - tomtomvdp (01/04/2016) [-]
Yeah it's pretty easy , just do what I did and buy the black one. Watch out for your bike tho

hydrogen peroxide and then UV light, if the plastic is white. If it's other colors then i dont ******* know. And the H2O2 has to be in a higher concentrate than just the cheap stuff you can find at walmart. I think there's a youtube channel that goes over this, The8bitguy, i think his name is.

Just clean it occasionally. The PC I was talking about most likely sat for years without being opened.
User avatar #65 to #28 - tropenthatshtup (01/04/2016) [-]
How often is occasionally?
Being a student I usually clean the outside of my tower whenever I have to move it. (Beggining and end of the semester).
I open it up once a year to check for physical damage or corrosion. I know its not a car battery, just something fairly visible that I didn't pick up on from using it or moving it.
I wipe down monitors whenever I touch the base or top and gross myself out by the amount of dust on them.
User avatar #68 to #65 - OtisMcWonderful (01/04/2016) [-]
I usually do mine every 2-4 months. You may have to do it more or less depending on how dusty your environment is.

Never seen anyone smoke inside, with the exceptions of old people and junkies smoking under cooker hoods. I think it's ******* disgusting.

The guy whose computer that is, was a kurdish immigrant.

Well it is ******* disgusting , my room smells like burned tobacco 24/7. And I'm yet to see a Kurd whom is not smoking.

Then smoke outside...

Health is no my main concern. Somking is bad for your body, and that's why I do it. When I walk my dog , I smoke outside. I'm not trying to sell you anything here, I do in fact live a unhealthy life.

weed or cigs because as both will leave a resen the resen from cigs is way worse for example i only smoke weed not cigs (yes i know im autistic or w/e) and when i clean my computer its not bad just lots of dust and a little bit of "Residue" which comes up nicly with a cloth and air duster but other guy was correct people who smoke cigs inside their computers are coverd in tar on the inside if the computer sucked up the smoke
User avatar #40 to #12 - geothermal (01/04/2016) [-]
the best way i personally found to get around this, because i also smoke near my computer, is to get an air filter for things like home vents and such, cut out sections that fit over the intake fans and tape them on. The filters have a minimal effect on airflow and no nasty **** gets into the case.
User avatar #71 to #40 - OtisMcWonderful (01/04/2016) [-]
If you're incredibly cheap, pantyhose works fine for this too. Just tape it over your intakes.
User avatar #60 to #40 - tomtomvdp (01/04/2016) [-]
My case already comes with those , so I guess at least I got that one right. Thanks for the advice !

Was about to write something like this until i found i was beat, but in addition to messing up fans and heatsink smoke is slightly corrosive to electronics as well.
Although i'm unsure if corrosion from cigarette smoke would cause a noticeable difference in components lasting time i think its reasonable to assume it could in some examples.
Anyone know more bout this **** than me?
User avatar #36 to #35 - OtisMcWonderful (01/04/2016) [-]
It doesn't seem to have too much of an effect. The PC was a 10+ year old Poweredge with a Pentium 4. Heat would probably have a more noticeable effect on hardware than the tar dust itself.

Some companies Apple are known for refusing warranty over products that were in the same room as smokers.
I've just pulled up the 1st result on Google but if you're interested there are plenty other cases out there : discussions.apple.com/thread/3071271?tstart=0
User avatar #9 to #8 - OtisMcWonderful (01/04/2016) [-]
Oh, and obviously the damage would come from the dust causing temps to rise.

User avatar #63 to #44 - assdoreponyfucker (01/04/2016) [-]
you probably didn't inhale it right. just having it enter your mouth and blowing it out won't do nothing. what helps for beginners is to take a half hit and take a deep breath of air without blowing out the smoke so it can get to your lungs easier. that and don't smoke schwag. heart racing is normal, my friend quit because he got scared when his pulse jumped to 180 bpm
User avatar #66 to #63 - youdoublecongoid (01/04/2016) [-]
I don't want to sound rude so I wont say I'm not retarded, but it's very well known that you have to inhale into your lungs and I did that. I've smoked ciggarettes and pipe for some time and inhaled it into the lungs.

Truth told, I had tried many times with no effect except for that one tiem when I got a little effect and got scared. Then later, since I hadn't gotten any high and though all the hash I've gotten was like 97% camel poo, I put like a ******* LOT into the pipe bowl. That's when I got the extreme ******** of heartrace and just outright horror.

So, if I start smaller, do you think I can get a real high? I've got external heartbeats from that **** and I'm very wary because of it. Also, Schwag?
User avatar #81 to #66 - assdoreponyfucker (01/05/2016) [-]
schwag is just really **** quality weed. and since you apparently smoked hasch which i've never tried, I can't really have a say but to try some actual weed. Start off small and experiment on from there. Smoke with friends who smoke weed often so you don't make rookie mistakes of packing the bowl with a stem or seed, not saying you would but it helped me learning from my friends. Paranoia has happened to me before, not often, but it happens and I don't know why it happens only occasionally. If you keep getting paranoid when you smoke I don't know what to tell you

Cigarette smoke stains walls, furniture, drapes and whatever it's blown at. I can imagine it would be bad for the computer in the long run. Not to mention the permanent tobacco stench in there. Bad idea through and through.
#6 to #3 - comradewinter ONLINE (01/04/2016) [-]
That is granted you blow it at the computer, though.
User avatar #7 to #6 - akulakhan (01/04/2016) [-]
If it's a laptop anon would smoke in front of, the smoke would get inside. If it's a PC, and the system unit is standing on the desk (so still in front of him), it would be the same. Either way it's a bad idea to smoke indoors, the smoke crawls into any crevice available, you don't need to blow it in yourself.

I've once met a girl at a party who did such a thing and put out cigarettes on her keyboard. I cringed hard when she was telling me this. Can imagine the keyboard didn't last long.
#16 to #7 - epodax (01/04/2016) [-]
I'm not disagreeing that smoking inside is bad and yada yada, but how is the keyboard going to get damaged by it? I mean, sure if you drop ash down there and don't clean it up and such, but, how would the smoke destroy the keyboard?
User avatar #17 to #16 - akulakhan (01/04/2016) [-]
I never said the smoke would ruin a keyboard, but that using it as an ashtray would. I think, I'm no expert on that, but I can't imagine a keyboard work well after such treatment.

Many techs won't even work on a smoker's computer. That 'tar' is toxic when concentrated like that.

User avatar #56 - malinko ONLINE (01/04/2016) [-]
Tech guy here. Masters degree mind you! and yes, very much so can smoke damage electronics. It makes the dust in the air sticky and when it gets sucked into your computer or game system via the intake fan, it coats the inside with the now sticky dust. which is a lot harder to clean (canned air will not do) and will cause over heating issues.
#62 - lininop (01/04/2016) [-]
I feel the urge to make a comment about how you guys are more concerned about your computers health from smoking than your own, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense so never mind.

Cigarette smoke can damage your computer severely overtime, any electronic device is susceptible. This is why the smoking section in most restaurants is in the back, to protect sensitive equipment.

Cigarette smoke will build up as dust inside your computer, and the heat will attract more dust. Not to mention cigarette smoke contains moisture which can damage the machine. I've spent hours cleaning a motherboard for someone because cigarette smoke caused the inside of the computer to become caked in dust. Then I learned how to clean computer components in a dish washer.

User avatar #33 to #24 - GnRNoD (01/04/2016) [-]
No, I'm not. I have some friends that work repairing computers, had to fix mine, took it them we opened it up and there was a lot of yellow stains on the inside it's like a coat of greasy yellow to wich dust particules attach causing the fan to turn slower, and moist moleculest to attach that also causes a lot of heat, so all in all a bit minimal there is a negative effect.
User avatar #57 - dazartimm (01/04/2016) [-]

technically i think the smoke would get in and get on the parts like how dust can. like how it gets on your walls and turn them yellow
