Did something similar with a girl i used to know, i put "Going to sleep now, bye " (for those who don't know is the kiss face) and she put "Don't you think you're being a bit forward with a kiss" so i replied "Oh sorry, i didn't mean to put that i meant to put a sad face because i didn't want to go and the keys are close together".

A couple months later after i got into a relationship with someone else she admitted that she got happy when i put the kiss face and was joking with me about it being forward but my reply saying it was accidental made her feel really bad.....Sometimes its better to just go with it and accept the consequences.

I'm sure we all know firsthand how difficult it is to bring sarcasm across with text. I can't tell you how many people I've ticked off because they thought I was serious about some joke. If she had said that to his face I'm sure it would have been in a flirting manor and he could have come back with something slick, but when you're two young people unsure of yourselves talking through a medium that doesn't transmit emotion well, accidents happen.

one time in college this i really liked this girl, i occasionally i would put <3 when i texted her goodnight, sometimes we'd all hang out at a friends and watch scary movies and she would sit really close to me and hold me, even before scary stuff started she'd grab my hand.

Honestly, the best approach is the direct one. Don't say you love her or that you like her, but just something like "You wanna go out tomorrow?". I got my last and first 2 girlfriends by simply asking: "You feel like going out tomorrow?" and then "Wanna go out tomorrow?"
It sounds stupid as **** , but that's the only thing that has worked for me so far.
