The Spongebob episode "Squirrel Jokes" has the most intelligent, well rounded analysis of offensive humor I' ever seen.
I' m being dead serious. Let me break it down.
episode starts with Spongebob struggling with his standout act
he relies on squirrel jokes to get the audience's laugh, which is their equivalent to racist jokes
Sandy gets offended, but Spongebob reassures her it' s all in good fun andthat everyone knows she' s the smartest person around
She responds like a mature adult and laughs it off
However, when she goes tothe grocery store, people repeat thajoker in a more simplified, mean spirited way.. like "hm dun squirrels are dumb"
This was a good way of showing that sometimes jokes really aren' t in good fun, because unlike the standout comedian, these people were basically harassing her
Sandy then asks Spongeboobs stoppie squirrel jokes
Retries. but he' s so worried about offending forthat he chokes, which in itself is a realistic scenario
Hethen continues the squirrel jokes, but betakes it a bit too far. He put on big goofy teeth which would be like same for Asian stereotypes. At that point it seemed mean spirited.
This bothers Sandy, and justifiably so. She has to take more extreme measures to show him the errors of his ways
But in the end, andthey is where it gets brilliant, Spongebob doesn' t stop squirrel jokes entirely. Instead, he ends up making fun of everyone equally, including himself, which is the most important part.
episode ends with everyone laughing at themselves
Every single standout comedian should watch this episode-
