My wife is Korean and I can tell you that in her family racism generally targets other Asians.
According to my mother in law:
Chinese will cheat you, don't ever trust a Chinese.
Indonesians are lazy and indulgent.
Thai are cowards.
Vietnamese are weak minded.
And Japanese are all bastards and world would be better off without them.

Eh, not as bad as Japanese, not as good as Indians. The Filipinos are the most open minded people I've seen out of the Asias, but some people don't consider them "Asian Asian" because they're brown instead of pale, basically. They're islanders, which basically means they're not ******* weirdos like everybody else in the region.

The Vietnamese, for the most part, hate the US; the West in general, really.
The only country they hate more than the US is France.
They're taught that the West is the root of all their problems, seriously.

If any white people aspiring to go to Vietnam happen to read this, don't.
Unless you know Vietnamese, or have a Vietnamese friend with you.
The people will scam you to your face, joking with their friends about it because they think white people don't understand what they're saying.
Additionally, they'll blatantly ignore prices as written down in their shop if it means scamming the white tourist.
That is all.

My Uncle teaches english in Vietnam. He loves it.

Attitudes have and are changing a lot in Nam. Since Trade opened up between the U.S. and Vietnam, relations have grown. And now with the Chinese trying to claim territory that the Vietnamese have legitimate claims on, the Vietnamese are trying to get all buddy buddy with the U.S.. IIRC we even started selling them weapons and other military stuff.
User avatar #92 to #80 - catburglarpenis (12/07/2015) [-]
Same. I used to know a guy that vacationed in Vietnam. He bought hookers for like 5 to a dollar, got hundreds of beers for cheap, and went to a special place where you can shoot off dickloads of rounds out of infinite weapons into the jungle, so long as you kept your weapon pointed in that direction. He loved it.

And he loved hookers.

He was a weird dude.

I can't remember what the Filipinos call it, but they basically have the same thing, it's like a "white people tax" but they have their own word for it. You can get taken advantage of in Seoul and Busan in South Korea, but otherwise you're golden as a foreigner in that country. I would say that you might have a foreigner tax in Japan, but no one can tell because everything is hyper expensive there anyways.
User avatar #60 to #58 - basalm (12/07/2015) [-]
Meh.
Asians sure are hot tho.
Also, South Korea has the second highest tourism rate in the world, I think. China is number one. Japan is number three. The US is number four.
User avatar #63 to #60 - slothboner (12/07/2015) [-]
Is that because asians all go to each others countries? I can't imagine people traveling halfway around the world every year to go to South Korea in masses.......
User avatar #93 to #63 - catburglarpenis (12/07/2015) [-]
Not really. You're thinking from an American perspective. Americans "travel" less than any other first world country on the planet, largely because our neighbors are undesirable and our landmass so large, as well as the undeniable fact that we're halfway around the world from anything. Even South Americans travel more than we do because traveling to other countries for them is what traveling to other states is for us. To pop over to China, it's a drive for the British. To pop over to South Korea from there, it's a short ferry. You may not even have to leave your car. To go from there to Japan, the Beetle Ferry will get you there in 4 hours for 120 bucks, and public transportation will whisk you to any location in Japan for only the small price of your Goddamn soul **** Japan is expensive
User avatar #94 to #93 - slothboner (12/07/2015) [-]
I guess I personally just would never want to travel to asian countries, they don't appeal to me.

But that is surprising, nice info.

I would have thought England or France were the most traveled to countries.I bet that they are for Americans anyway but I'm too lazy to google and find out
User avatar #95 to #94 - catburglarpenis (12/07/2015) [-]
Nah, when Americans travel they want "different". They also need a huge incentive to travel. With work opportunities in ESL teaching all across the "Asian Asias" and Chinse/Japanese mysticism, as well as the pull of K-Pop, you've got a strong pull to get people on that sweet sweet 12 hour plane ride, instead of one single romantic "sacre bleu" and glaring at the Eiffel Tower and you wonder how to pay for the wine you're drinking. And England? Just... why?

"Man this plane ticket was 3 months rent but now I know the rumors are true... they really do call fries 'chips' here in England. Well, time to return home the hotel fees were excruciating."

I highly recommend South Korea for a visit if you get the money to travel at all. It's a nice middle ground, often considered "first world living at a third world price". No one doesn't have a pleasant experience visiting there unless of course you're Japanese in which case PAY REPARATIONS!

Otherwise it'sa good time. China may be more overall cheap and foreign but it's also more dangerous and can be a mixed bag for tourists. You can either has a great time or step in human excrement shortly before you get your wallet stolen in Shanghai, then get beaten within an inch of your life by the municipal police for haggling for a doughnut later that same day. And for Europe? Germany all the way, you're guaranteed a good time. Not as precocious as Amsterdam and better experience overall. Not that pricey either. Stay away from Rome and especially other parts of Italy and of course Greece, it's all **** and they burn their garbage on the street. They're filthy people and they spit like camels if you get too close. They like to slap people and they're generally hated by the rest of Europe.
User avatar #96 to #95 - slothboner (12/07/2015) [-]
Asian countries don't appeal to me at all. The whole culture is just really not interesting and offputting to me.... I've never honestly met someone in real llife that was like "man I really want to go to "asian country"!"

I don't know what K-pop is so it must not be a very far reaching pull.

If I personally was going to spend a bunch of money I would want to travel northern europe- France, England, Wales, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands. Or Australia.

Asian culture is just not appealing to me, they can keep their ching chong **** over there, I won't be visiting.
User avatar #97 to #96 - catburglarpenis (12/08/2015) [-]
Eh, when I travel I want a whole different meal, not a hamburger with a different bun, you know? If I wanted a damn sandwich, I woulda stayed at home. That's my 2 cents though. You need a tour guide over there just to point out what's different about the European country versus just traveling to a different state.

"Here is Dlkfjds we eat our hot dogs with lots of topping!"

"Like in Chicago?"

"Yes but we also take the trolley everywhere!"

"Like in LA?"

"Yeah but haven't you noticed our funny accents?"

"Like in Boston?"

"C'mon man we fought Hitler for this."

"Like most Americans at the time?"

Whenever I go to a restaurant I want to eat something I can't make myself, you know?
User avatar #102 to #97 - slothboner (12/08/2015) [-]

User avatar #98 to #97 - slothboner (12/08/2015) [-]
You sound genuinely retarded. I've been to northern europe and its a completely different experience than any state/city i've been to in America. And each country is individually different than the next in a million ways.

You also sound like a fat **** if your go to experience seeking purpose is to taste the food.

User avatar #99 to #98 - catburglarpenis (12/08/2015) [-]
I'm with the military and I've been stationed to a litany of places, and 4 countries. The food was a metaphor. I also mentioned trollies, accents and Hitler. Many of my friends were stationed in Europe first before they were stationed in Asian countries, and they say that it really doesn't compare when it comes to a "vacation experience". Even if you're in a place like Italy half the time you can just pretend that it's a state where they don't speak English according to them. In Asia however, you're in the deep end of the pool right away, and you never really come up to breathe unless you head back to base.

I've personally never been to an European country, but I've been to the big 3 Asias: China, Japan and South Korea. Those of my friends who had visited European countries and was stationed with me in Asia said that they'd rather live in European countries but if they had to choose a place to visit, it'd be "Asia Asia", and each time they had a chance that's exactly what they did. It's like that old refrain from Rocky and Bullwinkle:

"And now for something COMPLETELY different!"

I mean, I'd hate to head to Disneyworld on a day off just to order a ham sandwich, you know? When I head to Seaworld, I not only want to see fish I'd never see in my day to day life, I want to EAT stuff I'd never EAT in my day to day life. I want a totally different experience then anything I had before.

By the way next time you head to Seaworld San Diego go ahead and eat with Shamu, it's worth it. **** that stupid fish the food there was delicious. The wife and I ate until we were stuffed and kept eating until they literally stopped us.

Hey, soldiers like to eat. We just run those extra calories right off.

My best friend is a marine (he gets home saturday, throwing him his anual rager, gets progressively more insane every year- currently expecting 125 people, rented out a bar, going to get weeeeeirrrrdddddd), he has been stationed in japan twice and ******* hates it.

Me and him went to northern europe together (no we aren't butt buddies), we both loved it.

I guess it obviously comes down to each individuals opinion but the chingchong bingbong doesn't interest me in any way. And northern Europe is a completely different experience than the US- major city, midwest, whatever, its completely ******* different. You need to get tested for autism if you really think London is the same as New York so much so that the main difference is an accent and calling fries "chips".
User avatar #104 to #100 - catburglarpenis (12/08/2015) [-]
Oh and I don't think LA has a distinct accent and neither does Chicago really. LA does have a trolley system though. My buddy is from LA and I've been to Chicago too many times to count now. But who knows? I lived in St. Louis most my life, so maybe I already have a Chicago accident just based on proximity and now I don't notice it?
User avatar #103 to #100 - catburglarpenis (12/08/2015) [-]
Of course he hates Japan, he ruined it for everyone else the bastard.

Marines constantly get in trouble in Japan, so the image is a little skewed. I didn't like Japan either compared to the others because it's expensive and gaudy, but it was still neat. I went all around the place, and half of it was disappointing because of the price but knowing that people actually live there somehow was mind boggling.

Everyone that I knew who was stationed in Europe then got stationed in Asia said that Asia was a better vacation spot, hands down. You suffer from the "vacation effect" if you just visit (Florida is cool on vacation for nothing but the rides, but living there is **** , I know for a fact because I used to live at the 7 mile marker from Disney). Out of aggregate opinions based on about 30 reviews from soldiers and sailors, the general opinion I get is that when you do both, you'd rather live in Europe and vacation in Asia than the other way around, and when it came down to it the culture shock of a place like London it was more of the difference of moving from the Midwest to Texas rather than the shock of moving from Chicago to Chinatown.

The wife is an E-4 in the Navy stationed out of Coronado California and I'm an E-6 in the Army about to graduate an officership program coming out of the greater St. Louis Missouri area. There are no fat kids in training programs like mine of course but there is an anime club. I know that this is a controversial opinion, but I'm almost 30 years old now. I stopped watching anime when I was 11 and I never regretted the decision. I know this is controversial to say but... I think I outgrew it.

Some most of the weirdest stuff comes from Japan.

Explain how being an islander implies not being weird.
User avatar #91 to #64 - catburglarpenis (12/07/2015) [-]
It's just that most travelers consider Japanese, Chinese and Koreans to be "Asian Asians" and the rest of the Asias to be "Islanders" producing mainly dirt poor people who aren't ******* weirdos. In the eyes of the worldwide community, you're much more likely to run into a normal person in places other than Chinoreapan, and those other cultures aren't as "backwards".

Take it this way: How do you view Russians? Clearly, they aren't Europeans and they're their own brand of strange, but would you lump them into the same category as the Chinoreapanese peoples? No? Well too bad, they're classified as Asians. Of course, they defy classification within their own borders, so they can classify themselves as whatever they want. A cucumber? A marshmallow? A human shaped cloud? Sure. Basically they're potential Tumblrinas with state-sponsored documentation if they want it. It's a strange quirk, but it deserves a mention.

Seeing as how most of the contents of Japan are of Chinese origin, I mean people, of course, I do not believe you can consider them truly "Islanders." Brief aside, recorded Japanese history begins with the Chinese discovering and colonizing the area and blending cultural beliefs with native ainu people, the Chinese giving Confucianism and such. User avatar #17 to #16 - penileburglar (12/07/2015) [-]
That's exactly what I've experienced as well (I work for a bunch of Koreans.) The ones I've met are mostly fine with Whites and pretty okay with Hispanics, but you definitely don't want to be Japanese, Chinese, Middle-Eastern, or African.

What I don't get is the HUGE BIG split in how South Koreans treat North Koreans. I've met some who are incredibly sympathetic to the plight of North Korea who would bend over backwards to help a North Korean refugee, and others who would willingly use North Korean children as target practice if given the chance. I don't really know what the common sentiment is, I'm just speaking off anecdotal experience with the 10 or so Koreans I regularly interact with.
#22 to #17 - xnotcreative (12/07/2015) [-]
Yeah, it's because whites and Hispanics are cool with every ethnicity.

My girlfriend that I live with is white and their family treats me as one of their own, and I work with Hispanics and they're the best and friendliest coworkers you can have (so long as you can work as hard as they can). They treat me like I'm them and are even teaching me some Spanish, but blacks?

They're just terrifying to be around.

That's rough buddy; I'm sorry to hear.

If it's any consolation, my coworkers didn't really like me when I first started either.

I still struggle to keep up with them but if you can show that you can pull your weight and the weight of others, they'll start respecting you. From what I've seen, it just takes time to win their respect but once you have it, it'll be so worth it.

I can't speak for all Koreans, but for the racist ones I know of, when we say we dislike a race, it's just the violent enigma of their race we don't enjoy.

If you're calm, peaceful and intelligent, we'd love you, but if you're violent and rude, we'll strongly dislike you and actively avoid you.

It depends, honestly. Racism in Korea is no different than racism in the U.S., it's not an absolute. There are plenty who are not racist at all, there are those who are racist to literally everyone but pureblooded Koreans (though obviously most of those stay in Korea), and then there's lots of in-between. I'm just sharing what I've experienced with the ones that I work with.

User avatar #81 to #68 - rapterjesus (12/07/2015) [-]
I really want that so much. If it is possible that Humanity may never overcome our hatred of those who are different. Then our only hope is finding something much more different to hate. ******* Xenos!

Make fun of the Taiwanese.

I know that Taiwan is notorious for this, but admit it, dude, some of your popstars look like they use more cosmetic products than Paris Hilton.
