Here driving instructors never teach to use hand brake, you just hold brake pedal with your right foot, release clutch just enough to feel some traction, release brake and accelerate, thats it. It sounds more complicated than it actually is. It might be hard to do if youre a new driver but once you get it its fantastic

Obviously your mind is set to "can't learn it, can't do it" As an eurofag i was driving manual when i was 13 years old, and its not big deal. You have to remember 4 things and thats it..

Tips I can give you:
Probably most important, when slamming the brakes you also have to push through the clutch pedal at the same time. Otherwise you'll kill the engine and you'll lose the break booster.

Every car is a bit different, some clutches are stronger, some have more free travel than others and so on. So don't be afraid if you stall the engine of a car you're not used to a couple of times. That can happen to the most experienced driver.

The feeling in your foot is important. Wearing sturdy shoes with high soles might have a negative influence (I had some difficulties with my army gear the first time). For the beginning I'd recommend sneakers.

At the beginning turn off the radio, your motor sounds are the best indicator to when changing gears. If your engine sounds like it's flooding change to a lower gear. If its sound is becoming a high "singing" change to a higher gear (except wenn going downhill of course). In spite it's always better to change it and change back if the car doesn't react/sound properly.

At traffic lights take out the gear to idling it's better for the clutch and if you have a longer stop or stop-and-go traffic it actually can become exhausting for your leg. If you don't stop for long it's unnecessary but if you are learning it it's somewhat of a good training.

if you're somewhat advanced try to drive away uphill. On the hill hit break and clutch for a total stop. Remain on the break and release the clutch carefully till you feel enough traction. Releasing not enough will make you roll backwards, too much stall the engine. It's just a matter of sense and experiece. You should also notice a slight rising of the hood. Then quickly release the break and hit the accelerator.

If you do it on a regular base you'll end up changing gears without even noticing.
Like pedalling on a bike.
Good luck on learning driving.

Thanks man, and about the whole shifting thing, my biggest problem is N - 1 shifts, and goign up hills, 2 - 6? Fine. My mother drove a manual from when I was born to when I was 14, she now has a semi auto

and about the whole "like a bike" thing
I was able to ride a bike when I was 3, then somehow forgot one day.

I didn't learn how to ride a bike again until I was 8

#169 to #165 - firesky (12/27/2015) [-]
Not riding a bike. Pedalling while riding one. You don't really have to mind that, do you? The "riding a bike" thing is better compared with "riding a car"

For your problems:
First gear and going uphill is both basically just a matter of experience. To release the pedal not too fast and to sense the traction with your foot. If you keep on doing it on a regular basis you'll soon be fine.

You probably know that stuff, but anyways:

For first gear:
Release the pedal really slowly till you notice the traction. Now start to push down the accelerator while keeping on releasing the clutch. Push it down about the same "amount" you release the clutch.

For uphill:
For the beginning pull the handbrake, release the clutch till you notice the traction. Hit the accelerator about halfway, release the clutch a bit more and when the hood rises release the handbrake. Accelerate a bit more and release the clutch fully. Don't mind if the motor is hitting higher levels of rpm for a short time while doing that.
If you are comfortable with that try it without handbrake but the regular one like I wrote before. That's basically the hardest thing you come across while driving stick.

unless you have knee problems it's not that bad. I live in phoenix and i used to drive up to 2 hours in rush hour traffic to get to work in a car with a manual transmission, It never bothered me one bit.

Depends what car you learned it in. I remember being like that with the Audi A3, but in a toyota corola I stalled (couldn't feel the biting point, here or notice it! Took another try to get it right)
That said I have no issues in the Vaxuhall astra 2.2 GTturbo diesel I drove, nor the Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 or Skoda Felicia 1.9 since tbh

The biggest issue after this is figuring out how to always get the biting point on different level slopes. Otherwise it's easy, infact the hardest thing with manuals is literally nothing. I mean **** I can move the car off in gear 2, 3 if I'm pushing it. Depends on the car though.
After that it's literally all about your style of driving, I like to skip gears so I tend to run through quite fast at first, if appropriate.

User avatar #30 - abesimpson (12/26/2015) [-]
I feel way more in control when driving a stick than driving an auto.

For example, if you're going downhill and feel the car is going too fast, you can just downshift and the car will cruise all the way down. Braking is not an option because it's not safe at certain speeds and you **** up the brake discs faster.
#63 to #30 - anon (12/26/2015) [-]
I also prefer standard transmission over automatic, but my wife can not drive a standard. So It makes more since for me to have a standard.
#167 to #30 - firesky (12/27/2015) [-]
Normally an auto has the option to chose gears 1-3 for these cases. I might add: Breaking is safe at all speeds when going downhill, it's for how long you do it. If you don't use the engine break but only your normal ones while going downhill they might fail after some time because of overheating.
That's especially dangerous with a camper as it can only break regularly and engine break often can't handle the additional load.

However, I agree with you that stick gives you way more control.
#32 to #30 - milvus (12/26/2015) [-]
you know there is one thing that can be as **** up as fast as some relativly cheap brake disks and thats an expensive to replace clutch disk. at least try to rev-match
User avatar #33 to #32 - abesimpson (12/26/2015) [-]
I didn't seem to explain myself correctly. It's not like I'm going going in fifth and suddenly downshift. That ***** up the car.

Slow down till a certain speed with the brakes and then downshift. You don't want to be braking the whole way down. You also don't have control of the car if you decide to freefall in the last gear and only use the brakes. That's suicide.
User avatar #71 to #33 - dazartimm (12/26/2015) [-]

If I ever go to the states, I'm going to insist on taking a UK-ready manual right hand drive car (driver & steering wheel on the right) - what are the odds an American will steal That?
#146 to #120 - sacrilegious (12/26/2015) [-]
Good luck figuring out how to drive on mirrored roads without a mirrored car.
User avatar #149 to #120 - improbablyyourdad (12/26/2015) [-]
I would actually steal your car just to see what its like driving in what is usually the passenger seat.
User avatar #122 to #120 - babyimpala (12/26/2015) [-]
what?
#123 to #122 - thearcher (12/26/2015) [-]
If I ever go to the US, I'm taking a British car with me - one with 3 pedals, a manual gearbox and the driver on the right of the car - because Americans drive automatic cars with drivers on the left, it's very unlikely my car will get stolen since hardly anyone will be able to drive it
User avatar #125 to #123 - babyimpala (12/26/2015) [-]
unless the car is over 25 years old you can't import a car into the US, also the US makes LOADS of manual cars, ironic that they make so many yet don't drive them.

Not even for a holiday for a few weeks? That sucks

You can while visting

The vehicle my dad made us all drive was always a manual. Farming deals a lot with manual transmissions.

depends in what part of europe you go to. there is those poor european countries that try their all to get money. are you 14 and american btw? because it seems you can't take a joke and you have awful grammar. and because you decided to go talk down our men and imply our women like americunts I'll talk down to you.
call me a racist if you want to but I prefer caucasian men. black are a little bit better than those goat ******* from middle east. I don't really care about america because I have my free healthcare, free schooling and I'm pretty happy with my life. I actually don't like american's since they can't seem to stop talking about themselves and how great they are. that's really rude and selfish, but I guess every kid has to be different than their parents and thus act like a barbarian.
I had american exchange student in my class. he was very arrogant douchebag and he thought that everybody loved him and his stories. but we have this weird thing called manners and we tried to politely say to him that we don't care about his stories and that he was being rude. he was either extremely stupid or selfish but he didn't get it until his another american exchange student friend said "I think they're trying to say to you shut your ******* mouth". we eventually heard that he was australian who moved to the states when he was young. an aussie who is more polite and smart than american? hah!

nah I don't care about americans. especially if they're black. I've heard that american blacks are either black or a ****** , and there is more ******* than blacks in america, and ******* are just people who can't behave, and they act like apes.
no thanks.

i read the first paragraph and got bored. not gonna bother with the rest but i bet ik how it goes: "blah blah youre a jerk because someone like me made a joke at your expense and now youre firing back. i am unable to take my own advice and take a joke so im going to yell at you and tell you how wrong you are. i also believe that because i was born where i am that makes that place superior, which in turn makes you inferior. get like me"
#88 to #73 - skebaba (12/26/2015) [-]
Well, it actually is smart, so that's technically correct.
#91 to #88 - lampmountaindew (12/26/2015) [-]
well....yes...it is smart, but its the lack of moral decency in the women that do that which you have to look out for. whats smart for her is freedom ending for you
#92 to #91 - skebaba (12/26/2015) [-]
Well, you just have to be smarter. That's basically how we have survived for so long.
#94 to #92 - lampmountaindew (12/26/2015) [-]
of course. i believe the smartest thing is to just avoid encounters like that to begin with. dont try to take the bitch who gets all wide eyed when she learns youre a yank and hops on. take the chick who talks to you like youre a local

It's idiot's like this that make American's look so dumb. Please don't judge us by these people. Instead feel sorry for us for having to put up with these people.

**xiontheshadows rolled image** I drive a 10-speed semi as a job now and boy oh boy before I went to CDL School, I never knew how to drive a manual, and even then, semis are a little different than regular personals. My thought is how they differ? If I were to get in a 5-6 speed car and drive it like a 10-13 speed semi, what i would have to consider..
