Yeah, let's burn off the highly explosive methane, which generates 30x more of a greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide, and somehow contribute to global warming despite converting it to a less harmful gas.

The largest single producer of methane on this planet is termite byproduct, collectively producing and estimated 20 million tonnes per year. To put that in perspective, natural gas and petroleum systems in the US are responsible for 5.32 tonnes per year. Termite methane production accounts for roughly 1/3 of atmospheric methane produced on earth. Methane is approximately 14% of non water vapor greenhouse gasses. Water vapor accounts for 95% of all greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gasses make up approximately .05% of earth's atmosphere.

If you have to "pick" a greenhouse gas between methane and co2, you're better off burning the methane to produce an equal amount of the less potent co2

gas unleashed is methane - probably the 'worst' greenhouse gas in relation to environmental damage

burning methane converts it to CO2, which isnt that bad at all actually. CO2 is just the main issue because thats what theres most of, but we'd really be screwed if the CO2 was replaced with methane

Meh, the point is we usually get the gear to stop the spout set up before we dig the hole. That ****** under a ton of pressure, takes quite a bit to get it to stop eruptin up like that. Besides, those guys are in hard hats; they're probably part of a crew that IS harvesting that stuff. They figure its better to put off the smoke than the methane outa the spout.

Would the pressure not make it easier to harvest? That way, you don't need to pump it up. Perhaps a one-way valve may be used?

well i thought so too but my uncle worked on oil rigs before he died. when i asked him, he said the pressure had to be burnt off before they could hook up the equipment. i guess it kinda makes sense but i'm no expert, you may want to research it

Well, oil is more substantial so the impact is not air pressure but impact pressure. Gas will behave a lot differently...

Old comment but whatever. Its a huge pain in the ass to get the gas to stop while its under pressure. Pressure is pressure, doesn't matter if its gas or oil. Its one thing to build a valve and then dig a hole for it, its another to build a valve over a jet of gas strong enough to rip a half inch of steel. Pretty sure thats a methane vent, they're probably burning it cause the CO2 from exhaust is WAY less harmful than the pure gas.
User avatar #124 to #123 - witislimited
Reply 0 123456789123345869

Well, instead of containing the gas, why not exploit the pressure funnel it into some huge engine, burn it directly, and have it turn a crankshaft attached to a dynamo, or series of dynamos?

Or maybe make a huge gas tank that doubles as a wind tunnel,, and use the pressure from the methane to turn a series of windmills, until it fills up enough that the pressure subsides, or something like that?

The point being, exploit the pressure AND the methane, not contain it.
User avatar #125 to #124 - preacherQ
Reply 0 123456789123345869
(07/02/2014) [-]
Meh, because it would take more energy and resources to set that up than the methane would provide. You gotta figure you're either going to build all of this infrastructure on top of a huge, flammable, high pressure jet of poison, or you're going to build it next to it and somehow shift it into place despite the pressure? Nah man, its not really feasible. It would take so much work that it would actually cost energy and waste more resources than just burning it. This is exemplified by the fact that the people who harvest this stuff professionally chose to set it on fire instead.

A hippie tree hugging faggot would condemn the entire thing. They don't want any drilling or burning of natural fuels at all. But the thing is methane is a very powerful fuel. Besides pure hydrogen, not many other gases have a higher specific heat. Just burning off millions upon millions of BTUs of a very good and stable fuel is just a waste. Nothing hippie about disliking an unnecessary waste of a very good fuel source.
