That's actually practiced here in Mexico. Look for images of mexican manufacturing industry and you will see a lot of women in the production line. anyone can apply for those jobs but if a man and a woman have the same profile, they'll contract the woman because they get less sallary and no extra benefits (no pregnancy/maternity leave).

less costs does not mean more profits

the factory I work at refuses to spend any money on replacement parts and maintenance for the machines because it costs to much

as a result, the machines break down on a regular basis, sometimes requiring serious work.

A part that may have cost them $800 to replace will instead put the machine out of commission for a week and the machine averages $250 profit per day

First off, they don't get paid much less. The actual gap is miniscule.

Second, the eplanation for the gap is much simpler than most think. Biology kinda ****** them over with a liability that men simply don't have. A company will never have to worry about a man getting pregnant, nor any of the liabilities that brings - from paid leave, to the employee being out of the loop after said leave, to having to hire an entirely new person in the middle of a big project because the employee needed to focus on family.

Men DO have other health liabilities - most of them having to do with our shorter life expectancy. However, this doesn't offset the pay gap quite as much because of retirement ages. That said, if you look to older men and women, there's actually a pay gap the OTHER way - with women who are past menopause in particular making way more.
