I'm thinking about getting a tablet but it looks difficult to use. How long did it take you guys to get used to it?
I got mine a few months ago but haven't really used it 'til I went to college.
I've started using it a bit more intensely and over the course of a few days I've gotten much better at it, so basically if you do get one my advice is this:
Do a few exercises every day, like tracing a picture or cartoon character with your tablet, try drawing straight lines, etc.
I've found that writing out sentences with my tablet in cursive and hand print is very helpful in learning to use the surface.
Also, I've found that taping a piece of paper over your tablet's writing surface helps immensely, since it makes it feel like you are drawing more on paper again instead of a glossy surface (right after I taped a piece of paper on my Intuos5 small, my ability went up almost to my paper drawing skills. Just keep that in mind.)

Getting used to a tablet is fairly easy, getting used to the various trappings of digital media (Layers, blending, brush and pen tools the light spectrum colour wheel instead of a pigment based colour wheel etc) might take longer, depending on what program you use, but just plain drawing is pretty intuitive.

don't knock the cheap ones.
I got a flexible tablet from trust for £15 and it's worked like a dream for a couple of years. Won't be as good as the expensive ones, but it works completely fine, especially if you want to try them out for a while before investing seriously.
