Well technically if Anakin died there, he never would have turned into Darth Vader.
Without that the entire original series wouldn't have happened the way it did.
The Emperor would have risen to power through another puppet but Luke wouldn't have been born to stop him.

Also I don't get why people bag on i,II,III. Ok they're not the greatest films ever, but there not bad in terms of origin stories
User avatar #30 to #14 - charagrin (09/05/2014) [-]
You do know that Luke was not the chosen one, right? Darth Vader was. HE brought balance to the force by wiping the slate of jedi clean, then killing the last Sith(Palpatine). He wiped the slate clean so there would ne no Dark Jedi nor Light Jedi left, which in turn allowed Luke to rebuild the Jedi Order. Of course where there are Jedi there are Sith, but that was beyond Vaders scope as the chosen one.

One of the biggest missed plot points, that Luke was the protagonist, not the hero.
#32 to #30 - Jowi (09/05/2014) [-]
I am indeed aware of that. But I'm sure you'll agree that the only reason Vader returned to the light side was because of the love he had for his son.
Had Luke never been born, the lie perpetrated by the Emperor, then Vader would have had no reason to become good again. He would merely have wallowed in his own self-hatred for what he did to the Order and for killing Padme, which he thought he had done.
User avatar #33 to #32 - charagrin (09/05/2014) [-]
Good man, good man. I am so used to people knowing a lot about SW but not seeing that one little detail that seems so obvious. They all obsess over Luke, but even in the light of his greatest power he was second to Anakin.
#34 to #33 - Jowi (09/05/2014) [-]
He was nowhere near Anakin in terms of power.

And it was always clear to me that Anakin was the chosen one because, not only did Windu and Yoda declare it two of the most gifted Jedi with the force , but also the Chosen One would bring balance to the Force.
When Anakin killed Dooku and subsequently Vader wiped out the Jedi it left two Sith and two Jedi. Prophecy fulfilled right there. The prophecy never said that they would make the Light Side all powerful and vanquish the Dark. That was just what the Jedi, in their arrogance, assumed was meant.

Alas, although I consider myself a fan of SW, I wouldn't say that I was an expert. I'd never claim to know a lot about the EU for example because I haven't read any of the books. I've played some of the games like Empire at War and Battle Front II so I know bits about the formation of the Rebellion and the exploits of Vader's Fist but beyond that very little.
I'd consider myself a gifted Padawan at best

Yeah, stormtroopers were awesome though. Both the clone gen and the Imperial Enlisted. Missing all those shots despite firing thousands of times is pretty badass.

yeah but still Anakin was the chosen one he fulfilled it. luke was just the tool or something like that.
#88 to #65 - Jowi (09/05/2014) [-]
Yes, I know.... Me and charagrin mentioned it in the other comments.
My point was that without Luke, Vader wouldn't have become Anakin. And if Anakin had died at the start of Epi I, then probably the Rebellion would have failed all together

It would be Count Duku, the rebellion would still be a thing
#27 to #24 - Jowi (09/05/2014) [-]
No I don't think it would have been Dooku. He was never powerful enough
Palpatine created Anakin from the Mediclorians themselves. He was designed to be the most powerful being ever.
I believe that if he'd died in a pod racing wreck, Palpatine would have just had to start again with another creation

1 Is **** . It's so bad it sort of makes 2 and 3 look good in comparison.
2 Is sort of ok aside from the garbage "romance" which takes up a pretty good chunk of the movie, with the real plot almost a side-story.
3 Is decent in the mindless action sense, but still bad enough everywhere else in the movie to make bayformers seem good.
#17 to #16 - Jowi (09/05/2014) [-]
I thought 3 was the darkest of the series. That bit where DV walks into the Council Chambers and it's full of younglings, they ask what's going on and you just see his lightsabre draw? Chilling as **** man.

TBF I was 10 when III came out, so I may see it differently to people who were the same age when VI came out but still I thought it was an ok trilogy

All that would do is prevent Luke Skywalker from being born allowing the Emperor to fulfill all his hopes and dreams.
User avatar #12 to #8 - thesticklebricks (09/05/2014) [-]
yeah but, no Vader....
User avatar #18 to #12 - demigodofmadness (09/05/2014) [-]
The emperor is a ******* boss, I think he would manage without Vader as long as Luke isn't on the other side.
User avatar #57 to #18 - thebaseballexpert (09/05/2014) [-]
except, you know... it HAD to be Anakin to kill all the Jedi... so... no, the emperor couldn't have.
