Amerifag reporting in.
So we start out with 001 meter.
We know that centipedes have the word "centi" in the, and that centipedes live in Australia.
And Australia is upside down, so we flip 001 upside down and arrive at 100. But that can't be right since we can't handle more than 50 of anything, so we'll just blow up the middle east.

but when converting between units of different size, we only need to muliply/divide the original number by 10s, hundreds, thousands etc which you can easily do in your head just by adding/removing zeros from the original number. i don't even know how you convert between imperial units of measurement

Anyhow, celcius bases itself of freezing and boiling of water because we ourselves are like 70% water or something and it is our most abundant compound around, it is used in many daily aspects of our life and even mor ein chemistry.
That's why water is a well known variable wich give us a nice meaning to it's temperature so we can imagine something when we talk about celcius degrees.

1 gram is the mass of one cubic centimeter of water 4 degrees celcius. 1 kilogram is 1000 grams. 1 ton is 1000 kilograms and on the other end of the scale there's mg (miligrams) and nanograms.

I see absolutely no reason why you wouldn't accept these for meassuring weight, just because they're based off of the mass of water. They're entirely legit in that aspect.

The joke is that America refuses to let go of an archaic, illogical system. Just because you also use Metric (but not in every day life, I must stress) doesn't mean this isn't true.
