FJ, I'm looking for some input on whether or not I'm as broken when it comes to relationships as I think I am. I'll keep this one short. I apologize in advance for discussing the same general things repeatedly; this board is my only outlet.

There's a girl that has asked me to date her numerous times over the last two years. She's said she's liked me since Sophomore year in high school, but has also said that she doesn't have strong feelings for me. She just thinks we would make a good couple, on the basis that I'm nice to her, and that she trusts me.

Keep in mind that I'm the forever alone deluxe package. Never been kissed, and I throw in never seriously held a girl's hand at no extra cost. Never really hung out with a girl my age either; in fact, I've probably had less than 3 real female friends in my entire life.

Is it as ridiculous as it feels for someone like me to be repeatedly turning this girl down? I've had strong feelings for girls before, and I just can't get over the fact that I don't feel anything like those feelings when I text this girl. Her sense of humor, intellect, interests, none of it seems special to me. I have the opportunity to get all of my "firsts" out of the way, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I'm stuck with the mindset of a teenage girl in the 90's who wants everything to be "special."

I'm pretty sure this girl is going to be the last that ever approaches me with feelings like this. So my question is basically this: Do I continue with this mindset, or just throw all of my archaic values out the window and just finally dive into this?

You're not broken. You don't have to date someone just because they like you. Only date someone if you like them. First times aren't something that should just be ignored and left to rot. Your mindset is good. Do things the way you want them to be done. Don't let others decide your love life for you. You got this.

"Beggars can't be choosers."

It replays in my head over and over whenever I think about this.

Are you really a beggar? Consider that.

I should be. I know I should be. I know this is probably the only chance I'll have at this for as long as I'm in school, yet I'm not going to do it.

Good. If other people get standards, why shouldn't you? You don't have to wait to be approached by someone who likes you, go approach someone you like.

That's never worked before, so I've decided I won't be going through that feeling again. That's why this situation is important; it's a guarantee that's I'll get to experience a relationship once in my life. If I pass this up, I'm almost certain I won't. Still, it might be a better alternative to only being in one and having it not be real, so there's that.

You could learn a lesson from the chick that's been chasing you for 2 YEARS. If they refuse once, get to know her, then ask again.

The problem has never been with the girls. It's not like they're missing anything. I bring nothing to the boyfriend table. If any girl were to post their list of things they look for in a partner, I would bet, without even a slight hesitation, that I don't posses more than two of the most general qualifications listed. This girl could easily date someone else, because even though I personally am not attracted in that way, others could definitely be. It's not the same for me.
