As a music education major at the university of louisville, I would like to say it is not pointless at all. There is a lot that you just can't really teach yourself about music, it's a very tricky and in most cases (surprisingly) rigorous program, that can be both beneficial and enjoyable.
TL:DR It's useful

I'm actually in the Orchestra for the school of music, as i play violin. As a music education major I am required to take supplementary instrument courses as well.

My Schools webpage is just [url deleted]

Well, I have joined college for International Relations which is udder bullshit in my opinion. I didn't want that. I loved arts and studying music but I got realistic: I couldn't do shit with it, I had the time and some people said I actually had the talent too. But chances of me being discovered and apreaciated were 1/10000. So I gave that up but I still practice daily and, after college (and even during college) I will start getting my credits for my likes (I have played seberal instances which are the guitar - 6 years and bass, piano for 4, drums for 2 and violin for 1) as in getting some actual diplomas. Anyway, as long as you have something you like, do it. If you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth, but you gotta be willing to take the hits and not pointing fingers and say you're not where you wanna be because of him, or anybody. Cowards do that and THAT AIN'T YOU. :D Hope it helps.

Not pointless. If you're interested in the arts, go for it. For instance, I studied theatre/drama since grade 9. It resulted in 4 years of awesomeness! So again, if you're interested, SIGN UP.

This applies to post secondary as well.
