there is a big difference.

i got friends who fought in a war so i understand the situation...
but its true that if you are from a country where you are free to decide people may say it was your choice after all.
just like some people will tell a skimpy dressed slut that went with some gang thugs to a private party completely drunk that it was her own fault for getting raped.

Well, the only people i've ever really said say "hey, you're an asshole! they do this for us and you should respect that and feel bad when they have these sort of moments!" are people who havent served or don't plan to.

As a military man you're taught not to take anything for granted and just respect over all. If someone gives you something, be thankful. If they don't it was never expected, but always appreciate it.

where I'm from Russia you were expected to join my grandfathers time. His brother left a happy joking man and came back a shaken and bitter shell of his formal self. Even if he was forced he wanted to serve his country and I respect when Americans, despite not being forced, will stand up and defend their country. They know what can happen to then and yet they still put their name in the bucket. That is honorable.

Dutch Cadet here, I signed up because I wanted to help people in bad areas of the world. To all the idiots standing out there screaming: "The governement is wrong for interfering in all those countries." That's your opinion, all I know is that my governement does everything with the best for the whole world in mind. Wether that ends up good or bad is different. Anyway, you know the risks when you sign up, but that doesn't mean that makes it any less bad. Living gives you a high cance of dying, we all know that risk. And yet I have never heard somebody say; "Well, he choose to get born, so I guess he deserves to get killed by cancer."

I'm not joking. This was also in the 1950s or so, so keep that in mind while you're reading. Sexual abuse cases started coming in to psychiatrists, and this bizarre theory that humans could repress memories led them to pressure the kids into saying that they had been sexually abused. That's bad enough, but it escalated to the point where they started pressuring the kids to say they had been subject to satanic rituals by members of the towns, and a number of people were arrested for it. It spread, and eventually escalated to the point where they started getting stories of alien abductions and ****. This is actually why the entire idea of aliens abducting people exists in our society. Before it could get too out of hand, we realized that this was completely ******* insane, and the perpetual trainwreck that this was turning out to be was stopped before we started burning people at the stake.

Nah, man.

It's just as if you'd say that a person with a sprained ankle has the right to tell everyone "I have a broken leg", because of being too spoiled. It's overexaggarating and pretty much lying. Ot being seriously delusional. Your leg hurts, but it's not broken. Melody Hensey is mentally disabled - in many, many ways - but she doesn't have PTSD. Simple as that.

Not every vet went voluntary, sometimes people do it because it's the only good way to take care of their family. Or in vietnam, drafted. Not everyone is going to go walking in bravely knowing that at any second a bullet could go through their brain and end their life and any reasonable person is going to be ******* terrified as hell. My great uncle my grandfathers brother duh had PTSD from the war. When the meteor hit Russia in 2013 I freaked out. All I could think about while I was dialing the nursing home was "oh god he has PTSD, and, that noise is going to set him off, he has a heart condition, dear god let him ok". I finally get him on the phone and ask if he is ok and his exact words were, "of course I am? You think I don't know the difference between a bomb strike and a meteor strike? You worry to much and that's why you get premature grey hairs." I could tell he was scared from the slight shake in his voice but he was trying to make me feel better I cried from relief when he told me this.....

Are you yourself in? Have you legitimately seen the way things are for yourself? All I'm saying is that while there are indeed a few exceptions, there is definitely a reason most men in the military don't want women in combat or in the military to begin with. . . and if you can believe it, it's not just because we're all blindly sexist.

No but I understand why they wouldn't want women in. On average men are simply much more physically capable than women and there are other reasons. But still it would be best to include women in the military if they are up to the challenge.

please don't read this

I don't have ptsd, but I was actually beaten and I would say tortured by a man.

my hair was pulled, I was bitten until I bled, I was cut with a knife and a razor, I was punched and slapped, I was burned with the ends of cigarettes and sometimes just the actual lighter. Sometimes this would happen when being forced to perform a sexual act.
He told me a thousand times that I am something to be used, to be hated and forgotten. That I am nothing.

I can't talk about this with people I know in the real world, because I'm too afraid of people not taking me seriously or insulting me, saying it never happened and I'm just a stupid feminist. I HATE feminists, because they have made it so my almost a year long torture become something trivial, the abduction and rape I went through as a little girl something to be laughed at and forgotten.

He won over me, even now, because of modern feminists, and I will never forgive them for that.

I'm sorry

I did break into a thousand pieces....

it's taken years of therapy to even talk about it, and my current boyfriend struggles with me constantly to try to help me feel equal to him, but I feel so completely wrong and gross and useless if I'm not constantly doing something, anything to please him (sexual or no).

I don't know how you feel, i never could and i won't even pretend to understand what you're going through.

But to me it seems as though you believe yourself to be damaged, broken or undesirable and that you feel your boyfriend is doing you a favor by being with you thus you feel the need to constantly reimburse his love.

This might not mean much coming from a faceless, anonymous stranger on the internet, but you did nothing wrong. It wasn't your fault in any way, shape or form. The world is full of sickness and you are simply a victim. This doesn't make you personally worthless or undesirable any more than it would make any other victim of any other crime.
If you want to please your boyfriend, then start treating yourself better and realise that you are absolutely not "wrong and gross and useless". If he truly cares about you then nothing will please him more.

I don't know, those are just my two cents. I could be wrong completely or whatever. I just wanted to put that out there in case it could help at least a bit.

(A war veteran moves away from the loud event, casually leans on a pillar and covers her ears in order to hear the other person on the phone)*.

Just because she's wearing a uniform, you're all quick to assume that her covering her ears means she's experiencing psychological trauma. I mean, she's obviously in a relaxed state, leaning on a pillar with crossed legs. If you saw an everyday person in the exact same state, the first thing you would think is "Oh she's on her phone". The only disturbing thing about the whole experience is the creep taking her picture.

PTSD is a terrible thing, I'm not saying people don't get it and I agree with the captions but that's not what this picture is about. Either way, the person taking the picture is either a creep or an insensitive douche.

I wouldn't say that's a relaxed position, and generally people don't try to cover the back of their heads while listening to a phone call.

Also, sorry, the fact she has her legs crossed does make it seem like she's more relaxed. To me, it does also look like she's simply on the phone, not that PTSD isn't bad or anything, but I don't believe this is an example of it, just my opinion.

Yeah I can see what you're saying, but that doesn't seem like a relaxed position to me. Heel-toe isn't quite crossed enough to look relaxed to me, and she still seems to be ducking her head down, which you wouldn't really need to do if you were just trying to hear better. Not saying that she's definitely avoiding fireworks or something like that, but it could really go either way based on just the picture alone

If you put the palm of your hand up to your ear (the most efficient way of blocking out noise) your fingers do reach up kinda around your head.

....or maybe she actually is hiding from a fireworks show and the caption accurately describes the picture.

"but that's not what this picture is about. "
Why would you just assume that?

If the fireworks triggered this woman's PTSD she wouldn't just lean behind a nearby pillar and cover her ears. PTSD symptoms, among other things, include a sense of mortal fear, panic and paranoia. Most often the subjects suffer recurring flashbacks of the events that caused PTSD and feel as if they're reliving all of it again. You assume this woman is scared of fireworks. Tell me, do you think, when faced with mortal danger of explosions and bullets blazing inches from her (what fireworks would remind her of), this woman would just stroll to a nearby tree and lean on it with legs crossed? Or would she maybe find a more appropriate hiding place? Or, if such a thing is unavailable, at least crouch down to minimize the threat to her? Surely she would keep both feet firmly on the ground, both out of fear and to be prepared to move should the need arise. She wouldn't cross her legs, seeing how that's a rather unstable and relaxed position and thus the stupidest thing she could do in that situation.

I agree with you though, I don't know what's really happening in the picture. I'm just assuming. But so are you. The difference is: your assumption is based on the fact she's wearing a uniform and on the words someone on the ever-so-truthful internet typed around the picture, while my assumption is based on common sense and general public knowledge about PTSD symptoms.

I am not trying to cause distress here or diminish the severity of whatever problems the woman in the picture might have. Again, I agree with the message and PTSD is terrible. I'm just saying the only thing for certain in a picture this vague is that its very existence is the invasion of the woman's privacy and it shouldn't be used to promote any idea, regardless of how noble it might be or whether she actually has PTSD or not.
