How can we even prove that the debate happened if it was in the past?

How can the debate be real if our words aren't real?

We can't. You weren't there, so it didn't happen the way you think it happened

Yeah, he even made up his own definition for observational science. And I'm pretty sure he pulled historical science out of his ass.

nobody is bashing religion here, they are bashing young earth creationists

as bill said repeatedly in the debate, there are millions of Christians who do not think that genesis is to be taken as a literal and accurate historical text proving that the universe was made in 7 24-hour days and the series of joe begat billy, who begat tom... gives a precise measurement of the age of the earth being 10,000

that is the stupid idea here that can only be supported by saying "yeah sure, well, even though we know that trees add a ring every year they are alive, and that tree there has 12,000 rings, that doesn't prove that it is 12,000 years old, you don't know, you weren't there, god must have made that tree 2,000 years old at creation, historical science isn't real so shut up"

It is entirely possible, and quite logical to believe that perhaps god explained the nature of creation in a way that would make sense to a bunch of shepherds living in mud huts 5,000 years ago and that genesis is not a word for word precise retelling of the birth of existence exactly as it happened.

In this regard it's also important to note the topic of the debate. They weren't out to prove that the earth was/wasn't created, the debate was for if creation theory has a place in modern science. Bill points out that one of the most important things in science is being able to make predictions. Ham is basically saying "We can't make predictions based on the past because things were different when God made them." In other words, if Ham is right, all modern science is pointless, so Ham's theories don't really have a place in modern science.

I've been trying to explain this idea for years and no one has ever thought along the same lines. Thanks for restoring a portion of my sanity today.

I'm a slight christian and I believe that either God is really that powerful to make the earth PRETEND to be this old, just to **** with us, OR he created natural processes to make the earth, it just took billions of years. I mean really, WHY would a god make this young earth, and then give it all these old things that ALL follow this rule. "Haha, that's screw em all to hell. **** you guys, I liked the lemurs better." I mean really, REALLY, what explanation can any young earther give as to why God would WANT to put fossils in the ground? I know we live in the same house and I could just say this to you but you're at work Mr. Angry dome

ok, seriously. who even cares about this debate. why bother debating god vs science in the first place? people dont worship religion because of facts, or knowledge, they do it because of faith, whereas athiests, like me, put their faith in something else other than a diety. the whole thing is just making both sides look like huge dicks to the other, and dividing people for needless reasons.
