Pretty much. People start too big, then they crash and burn. New habits are best made in progressive steps. This is actually supported by research in educational/motivational psychology, which I've been studying for s's and g's the past few months.
One piece of advice for you that I learned the hard way: with exercising, especially if you start to take it more seriously, get your diet in order. If you're looking to lose weight, the majority of that is going to come from a proper diet. If you're looking to bulk up because you're a skinny bastard (as was my case), then find a sustainable meal plan that lets you take in a lot of healthy carbs and calories, or you'll start crashing mid-exercise after about a month or so.
