Seriously though, if the guy with the knife actually wanted to fight, the guy with the sword would be at a disadvantage. The close distance and the very narrow space between rows very severely limits the sword's options, while the same leaves the sword guy in range of just about everything a knife can do.

On the other side of the coin, that sword looks like it might be one of a common brand of a practice sword. If that's true, and its not for show, the guy with the knife was screwed anyway.

There's a lot of psychological factors at play, and the thing is the robber probably actually doesn't want to fight. Most robbers don't want to kill because they're desperate enough to rob for money but they're morally opposed or at least they worry if they're caught there's going to be a much larger punishment.
Psychologically in the victim, I can't speak for everyone, but they don't experience these emotions because they feel justified in retaliating to someone who threatened them, so they're willing to fight when they robber might not be.

Plus, you can control a sword easier than a knife.

However, most robbers will back the hell off the moment they see a retaliation. They're never prepared for resistance and they thought it would be easy.

perhaps indoors, but they were going for the door anyways, and outside the sword can utilize it's full reach

they are indoors retard. They were going to the door to leave

"Greetings, I'm trying to burgle you rapidly and without too much commotion. Oh, I see you have drawn a clumsy weapon for the setting we are in. Don't fret honorable store clerk. Let us have a roust outside where you can use your weapon to its full potential and I will be at a drastic disadvantage. Come on, out we go where police and witnesses are a plenty! Tally Ho."

And i agree, but by that point he was already running away. If there was going to be a fight it would have been right when the guy turned to pick up the sword. There the sword could have easily been jammed.
