Cool people.

I grew up in a house built by the Amish. Now it is an exclusive music recording studio.

Look up "Rumspringa" for a good laugh!

I don't like the fact that they are willing to abandon and excommunicate their children, if they choose another way of life.
Abandoning your blood is one of the lowest things you can do as a human being. And these people do it for such a lame reason as a religious belief...

While they may not hurt anyone, they are cruel and fanatic.

I work in a place that is marketed as an "Amish Restaurant" and I'm here to tell you that Amish people can be the sweetest in the world, but at the same time they are also ****** up. I've heard lots of stories about Amish people ******* their cousins, nieces, sisters, daughters, and the like. It's actually a well-known thing that they do that. I hope you enjoy your god damn incest eggs

Some communities.

Actually, what Amish people can and cannot do according to their religion is often dictated by the local "head of their religion" whatever the **** you call it. But anyway, I commonly see young Amish girls walk around using cell phones and the like. They commonly use technology at my workplace as well. (I work at a "Traditional Amish Restaurant")
User avatar #167 to #116 - deutschblut (10/20/2015) [-]

User avatar #173 to #172 - deutschblut (10/21/2015) [-]
Is that new?

Also, I have never heard of an Amish restaurant.

I find it difficult to think that many Yanks would come to a place with a dirt floor, no lighting, no heat in the winter, and the smell of wood burning. Sounds cool to me. But I thought you were joking when you mentioned a "Traditional Amish Restaurant".

And by the way, if you are a Yank, why would they hire you? They would be required to do all the SSA and taxes and all that, which they are not familiar with.

It is cool that you are fluent in German, but I never heard of a Yank working with an Amish. You must be like the first ever...
User avatar #174 to #173 - shadowedge (10/21/2015) [-]
The Amish are pretty well ingrained into the culture of my home town. The corporation I work for is a national corporation that operates as a "Traditional Amish Restaurant" and simply hires Amish people to work for them. Being a little white boy, I'm allowed to work here because, well, anyone can.

www.dhgroup.com/

A national corporation that hired anyone...has no electricity, but somehow their own website...

Does not sound very Amish to me.

That link has pictures of Amish, which make me cringe. It is a HUGE sin to take a picture of an Amish. Let alone post it online!

I am guessing these "Amish girls with cellphones" are not Amish at all. Considering buttons are forbidden, I doubt they should be allowed cellphones.

You can choose to argue that giving them the choice so late in their life just makes the amish community stronger. Those that want to leave just do and don't try to convince their peers to do the same. Also, leaving the family to go to the city and cutting all friendly ties just makes it extremely unlikely that they will just abandon all amish connections. So how free of a choice is it really, after you've raised them in that environment?

I found out something super interesting recently. Apparently the Amish do not simply shun all technology. Because in fairness, any tool made by man can be argued as technology. They prefer to live a life free of unnecessary luxuries, but they will use more modern inventions like some power tools, or will see a modern doctor when someone is ill.
#131 to #36 - drthaawesomeone (10/20/2015) [-]
The thing about the power tools that the Amish use is most of the time they rig up their tools to use air instead of electricity, or generate their own electricity using wind and water I.e. the small metal turbines that you see all over the place in Lancaster pa

The amish can go F off like the rest of the extremely religious.
They are some of the worst scum of the earth when it comes to animal treatment. They view the dogs as lower than livestock, strictly money makers. I'm not a PETA supporter either, quite the opposite. But there are several large amish puppymills around where I'm at and the local pet supply store I work at does a lot of stuff with local rescues as well. I've seen first hand what some of these dogs look and act like when they've just been pulled from their **** holes. Dogs matted up with urine and feces so thick it takes an hour just to shave them down to give them a bath. Birth defects and illnesses. Just last week they got a couple golden retrievers in so introverted from abuse and lack of socialization all they wanted to do was sit in their kennels, stare at the floor behind them and pretend that there weren't human beings in the room with them. If the rescues won't take the ones they don't have any use for then they will kill them.

The amish around here treat their horses like **** , they don't beleive in gaudy or flashy animals, but they are always amazing with their dogs, about half a mile down the road an amish family owns a chihuahua that always barks at us to "protect" it's amish family
