went into the forest the trees
would get taller the deeper you

you could effectively walk

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga is slightly towards that theme. Nice read anyways.

to a very small degree it is.

Some animals need more space filled with trees. For food, shelter, resources.

You don't expect a monkey to live in only 1 tree in the middle of the desert. Some animals prefer more trees than others. This is actually why some forest birds are more endangered than others.

That doesn't mean you'll find bigger, more dangerous animals deep in the forests though, some hang out at the banks of rivers/estuaries, or perhaps a different subspecies successfully adjusted to the new environment. The change in fauna in the edge or center of the forest isn't very noticeable unless you're looking for a certain species or if there's something totally different, like a river nearby.

As for plants.. yeah they're pretty much all the same as long as the climate is. Doesn't really get too much darker it's just 'sunlight' and 'no sunlight'.

So you wouldn't find a giant deer, you'd probably just find another bird or insect you wouldn't think twice about. They're right about the undiscovered part if the forest is that large and isolated.

I mean, if it did get darker and scarier, it would be a lot easier not to get lost.

#183 to #180 - amuzen ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
I really don't know since I can't tell if I've been to that forest or not.

I just know that all the forests I've ever been have pretty much just the same size general size of trees throughout with a few big ones spread amongst them and the animal life was pretty much consistently the same from the moment you stopped being able to see the road to the very edge.

If what OP said was the case you'd be able to find your way out of any forest by simply walking in the direction of the shorter trees.

In all honesty that Deer is 3 or 4 times as tall as any moose I've seen even when we consider the Children's imagination making it bigger. It's even ten or so feet taller then the tallest giraffe on record as far as I can tell. It would have to be the result of several hundred years of selective breeding.

dont mean to **** on dreams...but since practically speaking all life on earth needs sunlight, the deeper you get the chances of finding life get lower.
User avatar #164 to #143 - payseht ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
I think you've just phrased it wrong but just in case...
Not all life requires sunlight. The life we're most familiar with does, but there is a great number of species that get their energy from the heat inside our planet, for example, chemical reactions, or simple underwater volcanoes.
Surprisingly, the lower you go the higher the chances are of finding life... the only part where it's rarer is in the middle where there's no source of heat
User avatar #272 to #164 - donatelo ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
true..but thats largely for microorganisms correct? they are still impressive no doubt, but life and the size of it will greatly decrease the further you go down...'legendary' enormous animals that people fantasize are unlikely to exist deep down, this because the size of prey is tiny.
User avatar #166 to #27 - payseht ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
there's a cool theory that there is an intelligent life form down there
I won't go on about it that much but it's the same idea we had about Mars before we studied it properly. Since it's a place with greatly higher pressures, they could simply not have the technology to do something equivalent to us shooting into space.
I mean, as long as something's unknown, we're free to believe whatever. People do that with god, I choose to do it with underwater "aliens"
User avatar #162 - sphincterface (10/25/2015) [-]
This would make a good premise for a video game. You have to make it to the center of the forest or something, and the deeper you get, the less you can see and the more freaky things get.

Like at first it looks all nice and pleasant you are going through a leisurely walk through the forest, then you start feeling like you're actually lost and it provides some tension. You have the chance to run into some aggresive wild animals like bears or something, but it's normal. Not scary.
Then it gets darker, trees get bigger and taller and the trunks get thicker. And it's empty. Nothing. Just you and your thoughts. Not a single noise.
You get further, you encounter life, and you get excited because you think you are on the right path, but as you get closer you realize the creature you saw is some demented looking thing that just stares at you. You go on your way, you start to think that everything is watching you now. Did that tree just blink? No, must have been your imagination.
Then it just keeps going and things get weirder and weirder, strangely shaped animals, large animals that shouldn't be that big, small animals that shouldn't be that small. The trees look like they are moving and dancing almost. It just ***** with your perception. In a way, it's almost kinda funny and it gives you a little bit of relaxation and release from the tension building up, just to throw you back into hell.
At this point, it's terrifying. The trees are way much larger beyond your comprehension, feeling like they grow to oblivion and block out all light save for some small rays of light coming from the canopy. The animals start getting angry and aggresive with you now, because they feel like you're invading their home. They stalk you, chase you, attack you and will try everything they can to kill you. And they are the most hideous things you will ever encounter. You will encounter some other human survivors but they are just mentally ****** up beyond all repair. They are demented as well and corrupted by the forest and will try to viciously murder you. The forest then tries to **** with your mind, you think the trees are talking and the animals start talking too. Everything wants you dead, everything. The game starts playing mind tricks with you, reversing controls, messing with the lighting and audio of the game, going completely black for a moment making you think the game crashed. Weird messages that pop up that would be normal messages from the game twisted into strange sentences that make absolutely no sense at all. Real 4th wall breaking **** , and it just keeps going and feels endless to the point where the game wears you down. The mixture of the fear, confusion, and frustration that the game provides you eventually emotionally exhausts the player and you feel like it's hopeless to play the game.

If you beat the game and make it to where you need to be, the game rewards you with something, I don't know. There's some very beautiful and relaxing scene you get in the end that has some sort of message and meaning to it. There's no catch to it, and you can spend as long as you want in that part of the game, allowing you to see this beautiful and relaxing environment that the developers made.
You can try to work your way back home, going back from the center to the outside again now that the game has also provided you with which way you need to go if you want to go back to where you came from instead of staying, but it gets so much more difficult from there, and since you already been through there once, the creatures in the forest remember you and memorize the methods you used to survive. So this time they're smarter and more aggresive.

Just an idea, I dunno. Maybe I am taking it too far.
User avatar #172 to #162 - hwaraam ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
Second half = too far.

Changing controls and lights and **** is just removing the funny.

For all the other, is ok. It's fun to have a progressive difficulty sytem. But if you go back, it should be easier just by common logic.

You start at the last dificulty and you have the gear you had last (if you had gear) so it would be like going from end game to the tutorial with end-game gear.
User avatar #198 to #172 - agreatusername (10/25/2015) [-]
I mean it makes sense.
It adds immersion to the game with the illusion of actual disorientation and confusion.
It wasnt meant to be funny, a game like this seems like it would be very serious and filled with the looming sense of pure fear.
And if the difficulty doesnt increase then whats the point in the game at all, it would become boring.
I feel like going back through the forest would be harder just as was stated above, the environment itself knows you now, and still wants to kill you.
Just my opinion though.
User avatar #270 to #198 - hwaraam ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]

See Mt. Everest you create these "base camps" And everyone who dies on the Mt is practically left there, to stay frozen forever. The game i am suggesting is basically the reverse to Mt Everest. (See pic)

So you make base camps as you go down, and as i said, It gets creepier and weirder as you go down. Possibly making each Home camp "Age" As you die, so its like the next explorer carrying on and trying to figure out what happened to the last.

SO no, Not like Ark. Not like ark at all. I have no idea how you thought it was Ark to begin with. It's a Exploring survival based game. Not Dino taming.

LIterally only useful if the devs are lazy and uncreative.

Why bother caring about making a detailed, immersive world if you can have a computer randomly put **** everywhere for you?

Except when you don't go starting a new game every time you boot up the game, like in a survival exploration game. It only works for roguelikes and some RPGs.

What's wrong with procedural generation? You can make a much larger map You say Ark is big, I say No Man's Sky is big. and the whole thing is just a forest anyways, what would the point of handcrafting it even be?

Normally hand-crafted is better, but this is one of the few cases where it's not.
The surprises would wear off after the first round if it's fully hand-crafted. That's the reason nobody I know is scared of Alien Isolation anymore. It became predictable. You know which rooms the Alien are in, and how to get past it. Every table to crawl under, every vent to go through, every corridor to avoid.

Procedural generation is normally lazy, but it has its uses in horror/building. We don't call Sid Meyer lazy for putting it in Civilization, do we?
#69 to #65 - rollfourexplain (10/25/2015) [-]
Maybe have a mix of random generation and player change? Every time the player dies the world changes somewhat. Trees die and regrow, the base you made grows decrepid-ish and moves to a different place somewhat (like pranking someone in Minecraft). It could be like that ZombieU game on the WiiU where when you die you play as a different survivor, or in this case explorer.
#70 to #69 - skeletorexplains ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
Mmm, and then you have to figure out what happened to the last explorer? Well not have to.

So then you go down into the woods, try to find your corpse and you see its been dragged off so you go down 3 more levels and its been infected by some kind of plant virus thing and it chases you throughout that level.

Why is no one making this

Perhaps there can be a story mode and infinite mode?
Wall of text imminent: My idea for the story is that you're trying to get to the other side. You're from a poor village which lives nearby. Maybe there's a resource at the other side, maybe you're just doing it to prove it can be done. You get there, and it's full of enemies. The game kinda keeps ******* with you, even though you're out of the woods. The game goes back to normal, the screen flashes, and it's shown that you were hallucinating. What were you decapitating, shooting and crushing? Why, your own village of course! The forest has ****** you up.
Or perhaps there are multiple endings, and that's the bad one.

And infinite mode is self-explanatory.

so semi related true story. my grandma lives in a college town in NorCal and i'd go visit her like every summer for like 4 summers in a row. One year my brother came up with me (Me 10, him 7), and we went for a walk through the forest. The forest literally started on the other side of the street from my grandma's house. It wasn't that it was THAT small of a town, she just happened to live right on the edge of town. (side note: if you've never been to NorCal, the trees are ancient and massive Sequoias like in the Redwood forest) So we are walking through the woods for what seemed like 2-3 hours and we found this little pond with a tire swing hanging over it. It's was too cold to swim but we kinda just hung our around the pond for another 2 hours or so. I realize it's starting to get dark, so i start to head "back" with my brother. By back, i mean i could find the footpath and started walking in a random direction climbing over falled trees and **** . About 15 minutes in i start to panic because the trail i had found was disappearing quickly. Not gonna lie, at this point, i start to FREAK OUT. "OMG I KILLED US. I DIDN"T LEARN ANYTHING IN CUB SCOUTS. WHERE THE HECK ARE WE? WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?" So eventually i found this huge round structure that i realize looked like a water tower, but on the ground. I'm like okay, my dad said the whole town was built on a mountainside, so we just need to go downhill. I start in a downward direction and eventually come to this extremely steep hill. I can see a path large enough to drive a car up and I'm convinced this is the way to Civilization. We carefully slide down this hill on our asses and right as we get to the bottom...a ******* jogger runs by. She just ran by before i could even say anything. 30 seconds later a guy comes around the corner and notices two kids scratched up and teary-eyed. We explain that we're super lost and just want to get home to grandma. He's like lol okay this way. WE WERE NEVER MORE THAN TWO ******* MILES FROM MY GRANDMA'S HOUSE. IN FACT, WE WERE RIGHT BEHIND A ******* UNIVERSITY. GODDAMN MY STUPID ASS.

I actually ended up attending that school when i got older. I tried to tell that story when i was in the dorms and unsurprisingly it got me zero pussy. And that's the story of how I got lost behind Humboldt State University.
User avatar #52 to #50 - thirdjess ONLINE (10/25/2015) [-]
similar story. My family and I went to New Zealand, and there was this one mountain I can't remember the name of. One side was this national park and you could hike to the top and get all these amazing views (that a 12 year old didn't really care about). The other side was this little cove with rock pools n stuff. To get to the cove you had to walk like two thirds up this hiking track, and then it split off into two paths.

My brother and I got bored so we decided to race down the mountain, I accidentally turned down towards the beach instead of the path that took us back to the carpark tourist centre thing. So I run all the way down this path, get to the beach, freak the **** out and just sat down and started crying. This surfer dude found me.

A Voyage to Arcturus has a forest like this.

It's a really cool, trippy and phillosophical scifi from the beginning of the 20th century. Sort of like Alice in Wonderland combined with a dash of LSD.
