I saw an article that was praising Fallout 4 for being the first game in the series in which you can play as a woman.
At this point I don't think they even try to pretend they play games anymore.

can you link the article? i want to wake up in the morning and read it

sounds like my mood could go one of two ways reading that schlop

Goddamn, I make male and female characters in games all the time and at no point ever in the history of my gaming has it made anything other than interesting differences.

You don't carry less, you don't die less, who cares what gender you are?

"you don't carry less"

Sometimes it can be weird. For example, in Metro: Last Light, there's that weird-ass relationship you end up forced into with that douchey sniper chick. I'm not into women, but Artyom is. So not only was I forced into a relationship that I personally didn't approve of because she treated Artyom (and by extension me) like **** but I also had to watch my character make out with a person I wasn't attracted to.

So in any game where you don't have to worry about another character making a move on you, it doesn't matter.
User avatar #197 to #185 - angelious (11/11/2015) [-]
in a story driven game you should be more focussed on enjoying the story as an outsider rather than forcing yourself into the boots of the character,,,just sayan.
User avatar #199 to #197 - derpwolf ONLINE (11/12/2015) [-]
I don't force myself into their shoes, really. I just tend to empathize with my character because I'm playing them through the ******** they have to go through. That's why I would never consider Artyom to be myself so much as someone I have to watch do stupid **** .
User avatar #204 to #199 - angelious (11/12/2015) [-]
so...wait. this makes it feel like you are saying being a heterosexual is stupid?

eh whatever...the point i was making was that; you should enjoy a story for being a story and not to fret about the decisions the characters in the story makes that dont fit your world view...
User avatar #205 to #204 - derpwolf ONLINE (11/12/2015) [-]
No, I don't think heterosexuality is stupid. I'm heterosexual. I think him deciding to enter into a relationship with some girl who treated him like **** every time they met was stupid. Not that it mattered, because he got axed anyway.

I get your point. In my opinion though, if I just wanted to watch a story unfold and experience it as a third party, I'd just watch a movie. The whole point (in my opinion) of playing games is that you get closer to the action. You empathize more with the character you play, become attached to their struggles and decisions.

Then again, I did get mad at a book character for making a decision that was obviously retarded and felt totally out-of-character for him. I may just be crazy. In the end, we're both entitled to our own opinions and I respect yours.

This is just why I feel that the ability to choose your gender matters occasionally. In games where things like that don't come up - ie. Spec Ops: The Line, Oblivion, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, Darksiders II, etc. - the gender/sex of your character couldn't matter less.

Do you now understand what the whole GamerGate thing is about?
It's a movement against unethical behavior in journalism
Flat-out lying just to appear progressive or whatever they're trying to do isn't exactly ethical. Even if they weren't lying their behavior is still very questionable seeing how little research they did on the subject
#44 to #42 - anon (11/11/2015) [-]
they do it for attention

and then some of them manage to convert that attention into cash profit.

super trolls man. straight out from under the bridge,
#94 to #42 - anon (11/11/2015) [-]
But all gamergate did was draw further attention to their articles, gaining them more of a following and more money. I'm convinced that they KNOW the stuff they're putting out it crap, but it's like national enquirer Sort of a "I married bigfoot" magazine , they make money off that crap and they'll get away with publishing it every time.

Even when all these gaming journals do is generate negative press and flame wars, all talking about it has ever accomplished is getting them more money.
User avatar #99 to #94 - europe (11/11/2015) [-]
You have clearly no idea what you're talking about.
Many of the "game journalism" sites that are deemed to be corrupt by GamerGate lost many of their most important advertisers, making them lose a lot of money through the efforts of GamerGate by notifying these large brands of the unsavory practices of those sites
#46 to #42 - anon (11/11/2015) [-]
well, if that where at all what gamergate is about, that would be great. thats what gamergate was, for about a week, after that it just turned into the biggest circeljerk the internet has ever seen.
User avatar #91 to #46 - novus (11/11/2015) [-]
The sad truth is, both sides think gamergate means something different, so the arguments don't even address the other sides points. It's like watching a team playing baseball against a team playing football. It's not even a real competition, and neither side can win because they aren't doing the same thing. The "gamer" side of gamergate says the conflict is about unethical journalism and hypocrisy, while the "social justice" side of gamergate says it's about equal rights and fair treatment. Neither side can win the argument because neither side can agree on what they're arguing *about*.
User avatar #105 to #46 - mgsexplain (11/11/2015) [-]
I don't know what everyone is thumbing him down, he's pretty on point. Sure, when it started it was gaining some good ground, and stayed like that for a while, but now that its hype has died down its kind of just a circlejerk of people hating feminists (Which I have no problem with), and while they're still calling for ethics in video game journalism, at this point its' taken a bit too long, and I believe while they have achieved some successes in their goal, it's ultimately not been achieved and I dont think it will be.

Finest Hour wasn't the first CoD game.

Technically it was the third, if you count CoD's expansion pack.

Finest Hour was, however, the first CoD game on console. You first play as her during the tractor factory mission after playing as Alexi? for the first few missions, which were just a fresh rehash of the first few Soviet missions from CoD on PC.
User avatar #50 to #9 - spoperman (11/11/2015) [-]
Also not forgetting the female soldiers in Call of Duty 2 during the russian missions
#198 to #50 - cookiedude (11/12/2015) [-]
I don't remember any female soldiers in CoD 2, but that doesn't mean they weren't there.

Also, weren't there some female soldiers in Ghosts?

And why didn't people make these articles for Tomb Raider? Or Halo 5, if you play co-op you can pick from two women to play as?

Why do people make such a big deal about this?
User avatar #202 to #198 - spoperman (11/12/2015) [-]
I haven't played any of them after Blops 2. But I'm hella sure there were in CoD2. I still remember it, the mission where you blow up that big building, she was armed with a PPSH and would move with your squad as you cleared a room. I actually think I need to play it again

Yeah that's not true, Commissars did the shooting, and most of the time it wasn't individual. There were brigades made of people who ran away and they would have them walk across minefields to clear them. If they survived, they were released back into regular service

that's enemy at the gates

the whole order 227 has been highly dramatized

"between August 1st and October 15th, statistics for blocking detachments on Stalingrad Front inculded: detained – 15,649 men, arrested - 244, executed - 278, sent to penal companies -218, sent to penal battalions - 42, sent back to their units and distribution points - 14,833 men"
User avatar #59 to #1 - galgawine (11/11/2015) [-]
I believe this is only true of certain units called "Penal Companies" or battalions. Basically criminals/cowards who were given suicide mission and if they tried to retreat they were killed. But not for all Soviet units I think. Wikipedia has this: Pursuant to Order No. 227, any attempt to retreat without orders, or even a failure to advance was punished by barrier troops ('zagraditel'nye otriady') or "anti-retreat" detachments of the Soviet special organization known as SMERSH (Smert shpionam), Russian for "Death to spies".[1][2] SMERSH units were used to shoot retreating men serving in penal units should the latter commence a retreat after failing either to advance to secure an objective, or to stop a German attack via counter-attack.[1][7] As a result, with nowhere else to go, the penal battalions usually advanced in a frenzy, running forwards until they were killed by enemy minefields, artillery, or heavy machine-gun fire. If the men survived and occupied their objective, they were rounded up and used again in the next assault.

Was told by my lieutenant that it was and would be a valid tactic.
They would arm these "kamikazi" as well as possible with vodka or whatnot.
While they go and die the officers in the back would mark the enemies defensive positions.

Isn't it weird how when women join the hobby, they demand that they need to see representation in the games? Like even when you're bored and need some entertainment, you're so self-centered that you can't even enjoy it if you don't even see some resemblance of yourself.

You never hear guys in the past complaining about how some guy character is too muscular. You never hear guys complain that kratos should be less muscular.

It's probably because these people that join are not for the hobby but for the need to play social justice. They all need a way to feel oppressed some how. Maybe the saying "Peace breeds weakness" really is true.

I always thought revisionist history took more than a few years to take affect.
Boy was I wrong, apparently the general public has the memory capacity (and fact checking ability) of a goldfish, and 'journalists' are all too happy to exploit that to push their own agendas. But I guess that makes sense in a society where trends literally are born and die off in less than a week, and keeping up with the times becomes a chore all its own.
