Women And Children First

did you know‘?
The tradition of "women and children first"
protocol is a legacy from the Birkenhead, a
ship that ran into a dangerous reef, and whose
soldiers famously stood firm allowing the
women and children to board the boats safely
as there were not enough serviceable
lifeboats for all the passengers.

While saving the women and children first makes evolutionary sense, it still kinda pisses me off. It's ridiculous that people expect men to be all like "Oh yeah screw self preservation, I'll just let myself ******* die because that random stranger happens to be of the female sex!"

Why not have an escape plan to accommodate all passengers?

Just another example of male privilege; we get to go down with the ship like badasses, women are forced to pussy out like a bitch by fleeing.

Fun fact, the men that didn't get on a lifeboat attempted to swim to shore, which was quite a ways away. Since the crash of the Birkenhead happened on the southern coast of South Africa, this didn't turn out too well. Most of the men were eaten by sharks.

Tel that to the men who survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. While many did die from drowning and exposure, a greater number than you think were killed by sharks.

Birkenhead, ah, what a ******** .

**anonymous rolled image** men are men and women are women
NEVER say their equal, it will make marriage boring

No, it does not.

That mentality is spread throughout the world, even in the countries which did not have ANY connection with Europe.

Women are considered weaker sex, so we take care of them more than we take care of men.
But that's "sexist" now

I think it's from our cave-dwelling ancestors where every fertile woman was twice as valuable to the clan than the men.

And that kind of expectation is why I don't support gender equality.

Yes I ******* knew, and I know it's highly likely people have been doing it way before that case - why the **** did you think people did that before you found that post?

That might have been survivable. If it's run aground in a reef, then maybe there was land nearby, and it was in a tropical location where the water wasn't as cold.

Someone fit might have been able to swim to shore.

I should probably wiki this before I say anything though. Too late.

I find this thought terrifying. I mean, you just know you're going to die. One moment you're alive, the next time you blinked the sea embraces you and you sink deeper and deeper until you get crushed by the pressure of millions of liters water above you.

I'd save myself and my loved ones first. Anyone who isn't in my close circle could drown for all I care.

umm that may have been the first documented case

but im pretty sure the tradition is a lot older than that
i mean instinctually built into our racial memory old

the reason being that men are, unfortunately for us, unnecessary
an entire community can grow and prosper with one or two males
but females are necessary for reproduction and children are necessary for...well to become adults

which is why way back when, the men would build up in society with no use and thus were sent off to do all the hunting, warring, and other dangerous things - eventually being forced to do so by adding the incentive of being acclaimed for their feats upon return; this was the birth of "honor"

and it took til the Titanic for them to realize they should put enough life boats to accommodate everybody

I can confirm this.
