We're all adrift, lost out in open sea. There's nothing to guide us but our own beliefs, but we have no way of knowing if they're even close to being right. But at least we aren't alone. We might all be adrift in an open sea, but we're adrift together.
Sure, some of us have bigger, shinier boats than the others. And some of us seem to keep springing leaks. But our boats are constantly bumping into each other. Normally we don't get enough time to do anything but recognize each other as fellow travelers, adrift and lost, but sometimes the boats stick together.
Sometimes, we cast a line, and lash ourselves together, and we decide to stay like that. We decide to travel with one another, for however long. It might be a few days, it might be a few years, it might be until we die. But for a little while, we drift together.
People drift apart, but more boats bump into yours. And that's all that really keeps us going, keeps us from jumping over board or punching holes in the bottom. Each other.
That, and the hope that maybe, just maybe, you'll see land tomorrow.
Don't forget that, boy. Don't you ever forget that. You're always going to be adrift, not sure of where you're going. But always remember, so is everyone else. They just might not know it.
