Server bills alone are $1800 a month.
Why did you turn off comments on this page?
Last time I left it on they were mostly users laughing, saying they hoped FJ died and I ended up homeless or dead on the streets.
How many users on FJ are there?
40,000 unique users login per day. The site gets about 300,000 unique visitors per day.
There's about 50,000 comments posted per day.
A few years ago that meant something, but with adblock and a bad economy, traffic means nothing.
How long does this site have?
Someone is offering to donate almost a month worth of money to pay for server bills.
I'll hold out as long as I can, shutting down parts of the site that cost the most server resources to run like boards which consume A LOT of CPU and database power.
I'm not asking users to pay for everything. But when spending all day working on the site, fighting off spammers yet allowing normal users to post, getting hated on for the site not pleasing every person who visits despite it being free and the endless hate, not getting any support at all is a huge slap in the face.
To own a website in 2015 you must be an expert:
- linux server administrator
- backend coder
- javascript guy
- css guy
- community manager
- get pissed on constantly and not ban users for it (or else they'll rebel and go to reddit where you get banned for being not SJW)
- you must be perfect at everything and be told you're garbage 24/7 everyday
