and religion was a thing.
go back to the earliest drawings and writings and you will find tales of part human and part animal
creatures.

human fascination mostly, we are curious animals and after a while, we get bored with the norm, in this case the usual sex between two human beings
sex with beasts was always a fantasy because of a number of reasons, loss of control being one, and again just another wild, strange fascination
furries try to normalize the view a little, they add human characteristics to animals, make them live day-to-day lives, but still retain animalistic urges and features to keep the excitement there
tl;dr - it's a sexual/psychological fantasy that we want but can't have irl, always has been always will be until gene splicing becomes a serious thing, then it will be normalized to where it's not a big thing anymore
