That's like saying "We don't need woodwork classes, we have screwdrivers for that"

I feel like they don't need to teach things like poetry in english class when in reality you don't need to learn that. Poetry should be an elective for kids who like poetry. The way I see it is there's little things in each subject math english science history , that don't need to be taught in each class. English is big on this. Obviously I need the skills to write essays and reports for many different careers, but **** like learning how to write poems and story books are absolutely not needed unless i'm interested in that sort of thing.
#88 to #86 - anon (01/29/2015) [-]
Education is not simply a means of utility for most people. Poetry has no monetary use but the idea is for at least a few students to read poetry and be inspired. Honestly whats the harm of spending an hour a day for a couple weeks talking about poetry, especially if that can result in the creation of new poetry and/or music.
#91 to #88 - fergin (01/29/2015) [-]
An hour a day?! Bro I had full units on poetry and writing books. I had to do an assignment back in highschool where I read Huckleberry Finn and I had to describe how the characters in the book would feel about modern day politics / religion / racism. Huckleberry Finn was a **** book, I already learned about racism 80 times in school with Martin Luther King they dont have to make me read this **** book just so I can learn about racism again. BTW I didn't have to right an essay I had to make a slide show which isn't really related to English either. Plus, its not like reading the book taught me literary/writing skills since its written in hill billy speak from ******* The Hills Have Eyes. Also, **** edgar allen poe he's a bitch.

I feel you brother - people that think of our history as lame or not important to us anymore , make me mad.

It is not only about knowing what a bunch of now dead people did - and NO it is not all about the **** that happened in WW2 and WW1

It is way deeper - way more.
History is the story of mankind. It started small an kept on going and inventing .
If we do not care to think about how we got here and how we might learn and move on from here - mankind is doomed to get stuck at this level of human evolution and might loose vital knowledge over time as people get dumber.

The one unique trade humans have above other smart animals is language, wich combined with writing skills , granted us the written memmory. Our whole society today is based on the simple collection of human memmory troughout history.

but that is just my two Sheckels

WHY WE NEED SCHOOL
Music: Creativity is as important as academia to some.
Sport: Exercise is good for you, dammit!
Languages: Communication will always be important.
English: Learning to speak your own language properly should not be a challenge.
Mathematics: The field of mathematics allows the simulation and understanding of our universe in profound ways, beyond the scope of a calculator.
Geography: First, who do you think makes the globes? Second, much of our worlds geography is unknown, Eg; Weather prediction, natural disasters.
History: Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.

There's Dora. You're gently caressing your lover on the moonlight coast of Spain, and she looks into your eyes with a longing only imagined in a story book. You touch her cheek, and bring your other hand to her chin, leaning in closely. The waves brush up on the sand, and the wind whistles through her dress. As your lips are about to make contact, she whispers, "Solo puedo pensar en ti". After her lovesunken eyes close tight, you respond with a voice as tender as velvet:

"Swiper....no swiping"

Let it calculate all zeroes a.1 to a.n and your polynomial divides into (x-a.1)(x-a.2)...(x-a_n). Just in case there are complex zeroes (which are always complex conjugats for polynomials with real coefficients) multiply them pairwise (x-a.k)(x-a.r) = (x²-(a.k*a.r)) such that a.k*a.r is a real number again. Done.

educate the **** out of her - people that refuse to understand the value of history are the reason this modern society is slowly hitting rock bottom if it comes down to morals and general knowledge.

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.” - Socrates

Considering people have been saying that civilisation has been going downhill for over 2000 years, I think you might be wrong in your views on modern society.
#152 to #139 - zielscheibe (01/29/2015) [-]
> implying just because we are still here does not mean society's failed and devolved before us.

Please have a look at the great roman empire that went to **** because of decadence and loss of knowledge - and the afttermath it caused.

Please think about the way greece *evolved* from Socrates times until now - they never again were a leading cultural influence to the world.

We have lost many skills troughout the times of 400 A.D until 14000 A.D if it comes to architecture and art.
Remember the * dark ages * were people went back to barbarism and sodomy ?
It took hundreds of years before we re-invented * not ******** into buckets * with fresh water and some basic idea of hygiene

Think also about the great emipre of Egypt
Egypt was the central power of africa- a beacon of hope. United the upper and lower Nile river areas and managed to keep peace. Math and science were leading.

Now remember what they became. Decadend and got sacked by others and devided.
Leading to the modern Egypt / north africa wich is far away from the glory they once had ( counted in landmass and economic wealth )

Take a look at the history of * ISLAM * - the nations and people that were ruled by this religion managed to become leading nations in science, art , music and medicine. Until the crusades around 1000 A.D. they were better evolved than the people of europe - Look at those nations now compared to europe. Just because the Wahhabites fanatics ****** **** up.

Not to mention all the cultures of asia , south america and africa that used to be empires that ruled a vast amount of landmass and people - inventing groundbreaking new methodes to survive and ideas to rule / live. Just to fall down and be forgotten.

If not for the people that cared about history and re-discovered many things in the early years of archeology - we would lack a certain and very important part of our knowledge.

Dont be fooled by our modern wealth in material and luxury. Do you have the basic skills to create just half of all the stuff you enjoy or use ? What if those people that know how to create those die ? ( Like in Warhammer 40K - praise the Omnissiah - )

History teaches you how and why things became what they are today.
Including tech and science.

I keep getting called a ******* every time I say it, but I still feel **** like this happens when your society is too pampered and looked after. They don't give a **** , because they can comfortably live off of welfare as white trash. In my ********** third world country welfare sucks, so no one questions why you have to go to school - you need at least a high-school diploma to work as a construction worker or at McDonalds. High-school isn't about learning useful **** , it's basically a test to see just how well you can cope with ******** and taking pointless orders as well as more minor stuff like putting in effort and being punctual. If you **** up, every employer's gonna go "Wow, this failed pullout actually managed to drop out of high-school. Probably couldn't even work as a janitor.". In more "modern" and liberal countries, however, little Tryone Jr. knows he don't need no edumacation, because the government is practically ******** money to support his ass. And this isn't just a criticism aimed at the US. Urop's even workse. Exhibit A: Sweden. ******* have to pay people just to get them to go to school.
