Funny story, whilst filming Saving Private Ryan the film crew fell back in time to WWII, the whole thing was unscripted and they just happened to catch it on film.

Well if we're swaping stories, it's the only movie from my adulthood that has made me cry.

The part with the beach bothers me so much. All the dead kids, they didn't even want to fight in the war, even all the sound effects were brutal.

I kinda want to rewatch it but I'm a bit scared I'll be traumatized and spend my Christmas boarding up my house.

Some good war movies: Unknown Soldier (Finnish); all adaptations are good - it's realistic and partially based on real events as the author of the book fought in Continuation War himself, Gränsen (Swedish) is also good and based mostly on WWII.

its not a film about how many explosions can be shown in an hour and a half, and that you can tell a story AND be historically accurate at the same time.

dont really care either way, but most films seem these days to be, explosion murder brawl 5 now in 3d.

not to be a huge dick but a filmmaker's criteria isn't making you enjoy the film. All of those movies sold very well so obviously the filmmaker is doing something right. Pyrotechnics are actually very difficult to use and design, same with animating a transformer and making it work with the camera. There's a lot of art and planning that goes into these movies, sometimes more than the movies YOU may like to watch. Just because the story isn't deep and thought provoking doesn't mean that it's a bad film.

Even making a movie effectively in 3D is very difficult. I wish you the best of luck in getting that stick out of your ass

"All of those movies sold very well so obviously the filmmaker is doing something right"

Justin Bieber also sells very well. Sandra Brown sells more than Dostoievski.

With that argument, you only show that people are moronic sheep who become less and less able of telling good from bad, quality from kitsch.

why are they moronic sheep if they enjoy a certain type of movie? if Dostoievski was "better" than Sandra Brown then why DID she sell more than him? you're putting yourself on this grand pedestal calling anyone who doesn't like the same movies or music as you do "moronic sheep"

not saying i want them to make films only i enjoy. if other people enjoy those films then go and enjoy it. not think they need my permission. i just said i dont enjoy it.
i also only stated my opinion that sticking 3d on films that dont need or make use of it, just because avatar did it is lazy, and instead filmmakers should be looking for something else to improve the experience.
there are loads of films i love that are awful, i love starship troopers 3 just BECAUSE of how bad it is. but even that i didnt consider lazy, its not about writing an amazing script or providing an amazing action scene. even the worst film deserves a place in history, even if its just to laugh at.
all im saying is that writers and directors should stop the same tired tricks and start actually moving things forward. rather than see how long it takes for people to get sick of wearing 3d glasses.
just an opinion, nothing more.

It tells a good story but is in no way historically accurate, almost everything in that film has been replacing the brits with americans. If you actually believe these kind of films(Inglorious Basterds, U-571, Pearl Harbor) you are going to end up with an incredibly distorted view of history. Also the fact that in the film D-Day was all down to the Americans and a little help from the french, is an insult to every person who died in the war.

that was such a good movie..

I feel sorry for both sides of the war.. axis and allies
the axis did not want to be there fighting either.. they wanted to go home too, they were scared too. they were forced by their country to fight. and fed lies... so they thought they were defending their country.

The truth is, god is on no side during war. People think war is always good versus bad... all black and white.

When the truth is.. while there is genocide going on by the axis
the allies are raping german civilians. not defending hitler here... not at all.

But after the war, people were the most hateful to the former wermacht prisoners of war. especially on the eastern front. When in reality they wermacht were the ones forced to fight.. while the wafen ss were the ones raping, pillaging, and murdering jews by the hundreds of thousands.

Another expample of how there are no "good guys"
is the hiroshima and nagasaki bombs. They claim US casualties would have been too high if we didn't bomb them. which is not true. the japs were becoming low in numbers, and the united states had planned on invading from the south while the russians were going to invade from the north. a two pronged attack. which would conquer them.. america however. did not want that, we wanted to show the world how big and bad we were.. so we bombed two non military cities, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

History is determined by the victors, is it not?

The Soviets were one of the major reasons why we dropped the bombs. We wanted to stop the spread of Communism. If I recall my professor correctly, we wanted them to surrender just to us so we could determine the terms of surrender.

Actually, Hiroshima WAS a military city. It was the HQ of the Japanese 2nd Army, and the 5th Division.
Nagisaki was bombed due to the fact that it was one of the biggest ports in south Japan, and was a major supplier of war materials. (Ships, equipment and whatnot).
Not trying to be an asshole, just pointing it out.

Saving Private Ryan, one of cinemas all time greatest masterpieces and whenever someone talks about WWII films this and Schindler's List are usually the two that come to mind. So what happens when the Academy Awards comes around? Saving Private Ryan loses to this ****.

Saying "it all comes down to opinion" is a philosophical cop out when it comes to aesthetics. You should argue, debate, discuss and explain why your "opinion" is better than others so we can progress as a creative and artistic culture.

How do you think film theory was developed? Or literary theory? Or art theory? Or the most complex and elaborate of all, music theory? By aesthetes saying "It's just our opinions so let's all go home. Beauty is subjective anyway, right?"

No. The reason we have developed a craft out of all these and you are able to get good, and even great, aesthetic pleasure from some pieces is because we tried to further our knowledge via discussion and argument, and by not copping out of this debate because we didn't want to hurt some dumb ass' (who would like Saving Private Ryan, for instance) emotions.

And no, I am not an idiot.

Though that was a big upset there is one worse than that. During the 25th Academy Awards two movies were said to win Best Picture and that was High Noon or The Quite Man, but both of them lost to Cecil B. DeMille's The Greatest Show on Earth. Many movie critics claim this to be one of the top 3 biggest upsets in Academy Award History.

I feel like the only person who disliked the Green Mile. I got about 2 hours into it and skipped the next day just so I wouldn't have to suffer through another hour of it. The only thing I liked about it was how awesome the actor who played the inmate was. Other than that it was nothing, just pure annoyance and disbelieve that people could enjoy something like that.

Two that I enjoy are Escape from Alcatraz as well as Cool Hand Luke, but another movie I will suggest for you if you haven't seen them is Stand By Me and The Shining seeing how you enjoy Steven King's Good book to movie transitions.

Another underrated Prison movie that I personally enjoy although it isn't rated that well by critics is a movie called Life. It is a Dramedy and stars Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence.

True, the Oscars are all political, it's just sad that a movie of that caliber lost to such a horrible movie in comparison.
