We let people pick 1 feat at the start of the game for their characters. We think it adds quite a bit of flavor for their characters and it helps make up for the fact that on level 1 you can get one shot in one ambush.
He went variant human, so he got two feats.. picked weapon master and that. Though a Fighter can do it at level 1 and do the same, just no 1d6 damage added in.
