At the end of the year I will have watched a movie for every other day of the year.
I've seen 246 out of IMDb's top 250 movies.
Tfw I can't see 250/250 this year because The Martian isn't out on Bluray until January.

Guys, that is a purebred Siberian Husky - it doesn't have a drop of wolf mixed in it.

THIS is a wolfdog. A real one, too. For one thing, you may notice it's a hell of a lot bigger - but it also doesn't have huge blue eyes or a big white patch on its face.

That's right - not a "hybrid", because there's no such thing; wolves and dogs are two types of the same species, so mixes between them aren't hybrids, which is also why they aren't born sterile like real hybrids (mules, ligers, etc.)

That poor eyebrow-less gal doesn't know any more about wolfdogs than she does about how to keep her laptops from frying. Sad, really.
#95 to #73 - warofdawn (12/15/2015) [-]
i give you the definition of hybrid
Full Definition of HYBRID
1
: an offspring of two animals or plants of different races, breeds, varieties, species, or genera
2
: a person whose background is a blend of two diverse cultures or traditions
3
a : something heterogeneous in origin or composition : composite <hybrids of complementary DNA and RNA strands> <a hybrid of medieval and Renaissance styles>
b : something (as a power plant, vehicle, or electronic circuit) that has two different types of components performing essentially the same function
User avatar #97 to #95 - Dember ONLINE (12/15/2015) [-]
By that definition, any mixed-breed dog is a hybrid too, but you don't see people saying "My Labrador / Poodle hybrid" do you?

In regards to animals, "Hybrid" is used to refer to a mix of two species. Wolves are Canis lupis, dogs are Canis lupus familiaris. They're just a subspecies of the wolf, so when crossed back to a wolf, you're not mixing two different species - just the domestic form and the wild form of the same animal.

I'm personally relieved that someone who doesn't know the difference between a wolfdog and a husky isn't responsible for controlling the instincts of a vicious killer. Don't get me wrong they're amazing animals, but incredibly dangerous with the wrong owner
User avatar #108 to #107 - Dember ONLINE (12/15/2015) [-]
That's total BS - all a real wolfdog or wolf would kill would be your neighbor's chickens or a stray cat, even if it got loose.

What's far, far more likely to happen is that it would be run over by a car or shot dead in a field.

By the way - huskies have high prey drives and would do the exact same thing. Ask anyone who has a husky.

Wolves aren't even good hunters in the wild; they mostly scavenge other predators' kills or prey on sick or injured animals.

A wolfdog or wolf born and raised in captivity can't survive in the wild, that's why reintroduction programs next to never work.

They're not aggressive toward people; if anything they're incredibly shy, timid and fearful creatures who would sooner **** and/or piss themselves and run in the opposite direction than confront or attack a human.

That's why real wolf mixes also make terrible guard dogs - they expect YOU to protect THEM. They're ************ .
#111 to #108 - anon (12/15/2015) [-]
I'm not saying they're all viscous killers. I'm just saying the wrong owner can unintentionally nurture those instincts and make them more dangerous then they would be even in the wild and romanticizing these animals encourages ignorant people to want to own them which will lead to more stigmas against them when their poorly trained wolfdogs do start killing their neighbors cats. And yeah that's true even of the golden retriever but wolfdogs are for the much much more experienced owner cause they don't have the advantage of having generations of human companionship in half their genes. They're an incredible animal but unless someone has a **** ton of experience they're doing both them and the animal a huge disservice owing one
User avatar #116 to #111 - Dember ONLINE (12/15/2015) [-]
deleted last reply because I accidentally a word

Yes to experience needed to keep them happy, healthy and safely contained in a secure environment they can live long, enjoyable, stimulating lives full of fun and enrichment.

A humongous No to them being dangerous vicious killers. That is very ignorant and uninformed mindset you've most likely gotten from the media, which more than likely was reporting on wolfy-looking pure dogs that negligent owners allowed to get loose and kill some farmer's sheep or harass their cattle before it was blown to smithereens.

In the rare cases that real wolfdogs do get loose, most are less likely to go after livestock or pets than even the well-loved and admired purebred Siberian Husky; because wolfdogs and wolves tend to be terrified of humans they don't know, and anything that smells like them.

I've seen countless cases of real wolfdogs getting loose - the ones who weren't mowed down by a car or shot for being mistaken as a coyote immediately usually ended up starving in the woods, living off of scraps left by campers but never getting close and needing to be caught in a life-trap because they were too fearful to go near anyone who wasn't their former owner.

I think I remember seeing you talking in a post about your dogs being taken away for being mistaken for wolves.
Did you ever get those back?
#114 to #110 - Dember ONLINE (12/15/2015) [-]
Yeah that was me...
We got three back home safe; we have updated pictures and even videos on the other three who are in loving, responsible homes.

That's why I promote education about wolfdog misrepresentation... learned a LOT about it this past year after idiots mistaking my huskies for wolves got them forcibly (and illegally) dragged out of my home and put through a several month long court battle trying to get them back home where they belong.

This bimbo in OP's post doesn't realize it but she's actually putting her DOG in a lot of danger by calling him a "wolf-hybrid" - and everyone who believes that a real wolfdog will curl up on the couch and sleep with you while you watch a movie is getting a very poor perception of them.

The majority of wolfdogs with any significant amount of wolf in them usually need to live outside in a secure enclosure because they're so high-strung and destructive; they don't like being cooped up indoors like a house pet.

Huskies on the other hand love to be with their humans, that's their "pack" to them...all of mine certainly did. They slept on my bed every night.

User avatar #100 to #99 - Dember ONLINE (12/15/2015) [-]
Actually, they probably believed it themselves. Misrepresentation spreads more through ignorance than through purposefully dishonest scams -- but sadly, that can happen as well.

You can rest assured that about 99% or more of all claimed "wolfdogs", "wolf hybrids" or pet "wolves" actually have extremely little or no wolf in them at all.

They're just dogs - some look convincingly wolf-like to the untrained eye, and others don't.

To be fair, I wish someone could have gotten that on video. I don't care what kind of dog it was, that would have been hilarious to witness, lol.

I kind of doubt you would know real wolf traits apart from dog traits even now, let alone when you were a little kid.

I mean, could you describe the differences between these two animals, even when seeing them side by side?

It was probably a German Shepherd, or a mix of one - but not part wolf.

No, the dog in OP's post is a purebred husky who is just mistaken to be part wolf.

Even a lower content wolfdog would have wolf traits - this dog has none. If there's a drop of wolf in it, it would be about 10% or less; not even enough to call it a wolfdog.
I mean if you were only 10% African American, would you be Black? No.

This is a pure husky, compared to a real wolfdog. Can you tell which is which?

Wolves do come in several colors.

However, that doesn't turn them into pure huskies - they will never have blue eyes or big, well-defined white markings like the one in the OP, which is in fact a purebred husky mistaken to be part wolf.

These two are the same color, but you can (hopefully) tell the difference between which is a wolf and which is a dog...

**anonymous used "*roll picture*"**

User avatar #77 to #45 - Dember ONLINE (12/14/2015) [-]
No, technically none are.

For starters, wolves and dogs are two different subspecies of the same species - meaning even real wolfdogs aren't hybrids at all. That's also why they aren't infertile, unlike true hybrids such as mules, ligers and even serval/cat mixes such as Savannahs.

Also, it's been recently discovered that dogs may not have descended from wolves at all - but rather, that both wolves and dogs descended from a common ancestor that is now extinct. Lots of cross-breeding has occurred over the thousands of years that dogs have existed, but the belief that they "came from" wolves may be very inaccurate.
User avatar #6 - doomxninja ONLINE (12/14/2015) [-]
