I interviewed a veteran and worked my way up to that question because I was interested in knowing what goes through a soldier's mind before, during, and after they killed someone. He was not offended because I actually showed interest in the other aspects of his life.

When someone blurts out "did you kill anybody?" upon finding out someone was in the military, it shows that the only thing on their mind as far as soldiers are concerned is "Soldiers are killers."

It would be like asking a person on financial assistance, "So are you just too lazy to get a job?"

It's ignorance combined with poor social skills, that would offend most people.

I agree. I knew my friend in the military for close to a year before I ever decided to go there, like with you, it was curiosity about how it feels to commit such an act as I cannot imagine it without going to prison for a very long time.
