because you said "western soldier" I am assuming you are alluding to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In which case, religious infighting between Sunni and Shiite factions in Iraq, and suicide bombings of civilian centers by (surprise surprise) religious extremists contributed to the body count in both countries. Soldiers did kill civilians, not going to dare to deny that. Your rationale just leaves out a lot

Best answer I got for this was from my uncle, an artillery Colonel. His reply was "Damn, son, you think we were tossing all that ordnance in the air for ***** and giggles? All those shells cost money. They'd BETTER have killed someone!"

I did ask one when I was 12... his answer? "Let me put it this way: My buddies and I walked in with 500 rounds of ammo each, we walked out with 0."

Probably not the exact wording/numbering (considering this was from 7 years ago), but that was essentially it.

I had a high school teacher who was a war veteran who was kind of an asshole but the intelligent people respected him because he was stern, stern but fair. I also was in class with a not so bright kid who once shot the fire extinguisher off when he was bored and dropped it and ran away from it when it went off. First thing he does when he finds out this guy is a vet "so u uhhh, ever killed no one?" entire class of non-downers cringe, wait for destruction from guy who never takes **** from anyone. He just says "If I have to answer that, then you are not a human being". Tension drops. "yeah but i axed u firfth" cringe. Replies back "I'm not answering it". Sigh of relief. "yeah but I axed u befor u sed dat, wer u in da battlefield?" Before the kid gets his ass kicked another teacher walks in with "Eric go be ****** stupid somewhere else". Great story about this post, rejects and cool computer teachers.

Reading "veterinarian" i was mildly confused.
Sure they euthanise every now and again, but what has this to do with a duck?

for some reason my family asks me this more than strangers. I don't like my family

It's not so much that I want to know if they killed anyone, I just like the gory details. I like to read about ******* getting baseball sized holes in their chests, I like hearing about raining body parts after an explosion goes off.

I understand it is rude to ask, but is there a specific unspoken reason not to? I'm clueless and i would love if someone filled me in thx

for all you veterans being asked this, just retaliate with "does your wife like anal sex?"

As a soldier, I can full-heartedly agree to this advice.

I knew someone who was like that, we had a vietnam veteran and a ww2 veteran speaking at my highschool a few years back. The ww2 vet was in one of the first waves on d-day, the vitenam vet was blind and had no hands. This idiot then asked them "Have either of you ever been in combat or did you just "serve"?" The whole school hated the kid

I think that's a pretty stupid question to ask to begin with, it's never even crossed my mind in my entire life

I don't get it though. Killing someone I mean. I'd feel no guilt. Well, maybe a little but I could sleep at night. This is what war is all about... who is left standing... and who isn't. It's sad, but that's the reality.

Unless of course they are comfortable enough with you to answer that question.

I interviewed a veteran and worked my way up to that question because I was interested in knowing what goes through a soldier's mind before, during, and after they killed someone. He was not offended because I actually showed interest in the other aspects of his life.

When someone blurts out "did you kill anybody?" upon finding out someone was in the military, it shows that the only thing on their mind as far as soldiers are concerned is "Soldiers are killers."

It would be like asking a person on financial assistance, "So are you just too lazy to get a job?"

It's ignorance combined with poor social skills, that would offend most people.
