Actually east Swedish vikings were more mercenaries than raiders so much that the Swedish king stripped all property from them if they joined the byzantium guard.
As for why they were more traders than raiders is quite simple, the east didn't have easily attacked places with gold unlike the west but that didn't really stop the vikings when they attacked the Eastern Roman Empire so technically Western vikings attacked undefended or barely defended **** meanwhile Eastern vikings attacked real heavy hitter.

I have to say we are kinda heading down this path in america too. Like its not normal to be patriotic anymore, its seen as rednecky and borderline racist. I dont think nationalism is a good thing, but I think patriotism is. I mean, if you are a citizen of a country shouldnt you be proud and support it? I have a regular US flag hanging in my apartment and too often I feel I have to explain why its there to people visiting. Im not saying we have to do the redneck "put the flag on everything," but I wish more people aside from them would express some patriotism because I feel like our flag is slowly turning less into "liberty and freedom" and more into just "anti-immigration and guns" purely by association with the group that flies it the most.
