It is, but at that time philosophy also meant plenty other things like metaphysis (study of nature), logical philosphy, ethical philosphy, etc..
philosophy was pretty much a placeholder name for a lot of other domain than this

Pretty sure he's saying that due to the era descartes dwelled in, his 'philosophical' works covered a lot more ground... Not really saying much else. Also it's foolish to judge an entire genre of study because you disagree with one possible view. Dualism is pretty ****** given the state of modern neurology; but just because some philosophy students believe the wrong thing, doesn't mean that something like machine sentience isn't a conversation to have with philosophers as well as scientists and engineers. As we close in on an era where immortality is in our grasp, there will be a great importance on whether an exact copy of your neurons is 'you', or if replacing each neuron, one by one, with mechanical ones will allow one to retain themselves even though this is similarly just a copy done more gradually. Questions like this don't belong in a programming classroom, nor a mechanical engineering one, but if humanity is to achieve such great feats these topics need to be discussed. Don't drop philosophy just because faggots take it as 'the easiest degree', it's just as important as any other field.

He believed animals had no souls and thus their pain was not worth caring about (resulting in a great deal of animal torture)

He believed your pineal gland was the seat of your soul

He has one of the worst god damned proofs for god since pascal's wager

He talked about how the senses were potentially unreliable ( one could be a brain in a vat or wearing a VR headset or something without knowing it) so really nothing in the world can technically truly be 'known'. With the exception, he would say, of the fact that we are thinking about something at all, even if our thoughts are controlled they exists and therefor one exists as a thinker, 'I think therefor i am'. He wasn't crazy it was a genuine philosophical line of inquiry regarding knowledge . He was a pretty cool guy imo

This was one of his quotes: "Whenever anyone has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offense cannot reach it". Such an amazing quote. I had it on my wall when I was younger among others. Such a nice insight into his mind.
