"Anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield will think hard before starting a war." Otto Von Bismarck

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honor the charge they made,
Honor the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred.

This was a letter of a French soldier to his family during Christmas 1914
"Dear Parents
I think you'll get bored because I'm a little late but I was expecting a letter from you because I have not received anything since the 12th. I think you're gonna get worried like a lot of us right now there is nothing nice. I took the guard outpost in 48 hours is very ugly, we can even hear the Krauts because they are 40 m away, as you see it is not far. They sing, whistle, they do not seem to get bored but I think they are like, just the others, wishing for it to end. They have quite the guts for two days ago came one of them 10 meters from our trench with a sausage and a box of cigars and others have showed up from their trench and there was not a shot fired from that. Such moments are rather funny, but it won't last long anymore because now we have a formal order of shoot.

It always ****** me up thinking about the fact they had to shoot at each other again the very next day. Although I read that a lot of troops got rotated off the front due to refusing to fight

"I saw some rats running from under the dead men's greatcoats, enormous rats, fat with human flesh. My heart pounded as we edged towards one of the bodies. His helmet had rolled off. The man displayed a grimacing face, stripped of flesh; the skull bare, the eyes devoured and from the yawning mouth leapt a rat."

Would REALLY recommend if you're into Swedish/Scandinavian cinematography.

Or the Templar's themselves. Though the main character is fictitous, it displays some of the types of people that would have joined the order and the inner workings. Besides the love plotline, it is far more historically accurate than "Kingdom of Heaven" for both the Templars and the Crusades.

The "A Wehrmacht soldier comforting a grieving comrade" is from the german motion picture "Die Brücke" from 1959. www.imdb.com/title/tt0052654/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

Nope, that's the Marlboro Man. " because Americans had "connected" with his photo, and nobody wanted to see him wounded or dead, he was offered a trip home. Miller turned down the offer because he did not want to leave his comrades behind."

That's why it pisses me off when some edgy ******** that's never been in a fight in their lives says something like "humanity loves war" or "war breeds strong people"

its from a movie. as everything crumbeld and the allied forces moved in from all sides, they choosed to arm children and old man, the so called "volkssturm" which translates ruffly into peoples storm. But hitler even ordered in his last days and in his madness to destroy all important infrastructure so the german population would suffer for beeing to "weak".

"For since we, a numerous band of men as we are, have learned from His teaching and His laws that evil ought not to be requited with evil, that it is better to suffer wrong than to inflict it, that we should rather shed our own blood than stain our hands and our conscience with that of another, an ungrateful world is now for a long period enjoying a benefit from Christ, inasmuch as by His means the rage of savage ferocity has been softened, and has begun to withhold hostile hands from the blood of a fellow-creature."
